Grease up all bearings in the skid and also the secondary side drive- and jackshaft bearings.
Clean and blow dry the bearings, then repack them with a good quality grease that repells water, like moly-grease.

do most change oil at the end of the season or wait till the fall.?...does it matter?

I have always done oil change before season starts. We have a very dry climate and I store my sled inside. I have never found any condensation in the oil on a oil change ever.
Also change oil and filter before every season.
Change chaincase oil before every season.
Check chain and sprockets and adjust chain tension while you're at it.
Lube all ball joints in the steering, the one under the tank as well.
