Opinions and experiences appreciated ! I am a low mileage (1000-1500per season) new england trail rider. I had a twin piped MachZ. Loved the power, got towed a few too many times. I really enjoy my 2007 Apex GT but want more power and SOME reliability. I am thinking of either an MPI stage 2 or buying a new Cat (I know.....) Turbo. I have my Apex handling well and enjoy it. But the power and reported good ride of the Cat chassis got me thinking. Can anybody shed some light on this subject to help my decision. Thanks !

Get the MPI for your Apex it will be a lot more power than the AC. How much HP does the AC put out? Not even close to what a Stage 2 MPI Supercharger kit for the Apex will put out.

A turbo AC will put 220+hp very easily... don't underestimate them...

But for reliability, I would go yamaha all the way.

Well Im gonna put the fly in it I have a new Jag ordered . For trail riding here is the list that the cat was the only one able to fill ! 200 relable h.p. with a warranty. 2 warm and comfortable. 3 fuel mileage is great on these boosted cats. And 4 the ride and handling of the f chassis is by far the best for most trail ride terrain I said most not moguls I have had a stage 2 super stay clear if you want fuel mileage never happen and the controllers are terrible I have 2 on the shelf that the company doesnt want. I think for all day reliable smile after miles of riding cat has hit a homerun. This sled has been in development since the inseption of the engine. Sorry guys my wife rides an f- series and it is smoooooooth.

From a ride and handling aspect I've got to be honest that the Cat is VERY nice. I rode a F1000 last year that was supposedly 185 horse and really liked it. Power came on strong at first and seemed to level out quickly. Never got a chance to run him with my RX1. The ride was impressive though. Very light in the front end.

Reliable?LOLOLLOLOLOLOLOLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLL

I will say after having both(s/c only 2 rides) the s/c will be reliable 100%. The turbo has its own issues. Bolts coming loose and cracks in this and that, all because of the big swing in temp on stainless parts. You will loose your warranty on both by turning up the boost, and yes they can tell by reading the ecu.

The only thing better on the Cat, is the handling. I've got a friend with a Jag with aftermarket MCX turbo, and it CAN NOT hang with the Turbo'd apex's. This sled is supposed to put out over 220hp, but it's still far from the 260's that most yamaha turbo kits put out. (the Phazer has 50 less hp then the Nytro, and we all know how much better the Nytro runs)

And. if your thinking of buying a cat with a turbo, why would you need a Yamaha with a supercharger? The Jag will have lag, just like the turbokits on the Yamahas.

It's a big decicion, but having been on both for a couple of seasons, I'd never buy the cat turbo...

IMHO.... :yam:

Thanks for the replies keep them coming. My local Cat dealer just lost the franchise so I have to add an hour to the time for a trip back for any warranty. That is a factor for me, especially a first year sled. Are the s/c sleds tempermental? What is this about controllers going bad ???

Mr Blue ride your S/C more and then tell us how you find it. They have issues as well as turbos. To have 200hp and a warranty at a lower price than an apex plus all the extras boost guage af gauge plus cost of install Yea the Jag is not a bargain everyone stay clear. For me I will keep my boosted apex for the thrill riding but for high mile trail running in northern Quebec and New Brunswick it will be my Jag.

Just for you to kmow...

I have raced a Turbo M7 (225hp) with my 287hp (on dyno) tpex, two year ago and I was BARELY faster than the M7.

That SAME M7 last winter raced against a 260hp Nytro (MPI) and the nytro got beat....

One thing I can say.... this M7 does run with big dogs, and all that with a BONE STOCK engine and a Boondocker turbo kit.

However, I can't testify its reliability, because that sled haven't been pushed for any more than 10 seconds maybe?

that's hard to argue, but let's get a few things straight...

The M chassis is how much lighter than the Apex? 70-80 lbs?

What track was the M running, and what track was the Nytro running? I've never been around a super'd Nytro, so I have no idea how they run, but I know I'd run my old Turbo'd apex mnt against ANY sled on the mountain... And I'm sure this winter will be no different with the stage 2 Powderlites turbo Nytro

You still need to put the hp to the ground, either through proper clutching or proper track sellection. From what I've experienced with my 4-strokes' longevity and what I've seen and heard about the 2-stroke's longevity, the only way I would go is 4-stroke. Broader power band more torque!
