I couldn't agree more Sasquatch. There's nothing that compares to the sound of an Apex.

There is nothing better than the 4 cyl. Apex engine for wide open trails but for the riding I do I'll take the 3 cylinder over it any day.

I thought I was the only one. The Apex sure sounds good to start with, but if you hit the twisties and are on and off it constantly...

Anyone that complains about the Apex should not ride one. The "drone", as you guys call it, is much more tolerable than the constant clutch rattle of the triple's.
I would say its not only the engine that gives a sled its charectaristics, if I could put an apex engine into my sled I would.. Jut look at these guys http://powerhousecustoms.ca/ there running apex engine and doing some nice technical riding..

The clutch rattle is fixable--the drone is not. If you get into extended riding at the speed of that drone it becomes unbearable--even worse if you have a hangover!!
I have owned both and the Apex power is fun but the poor fuel mileage combined with the small tank of the post 11's and the drone at certain trail speeds/conditions makes the the 3 cylinder a better trail motor in my opinion. That was one of the main reasons for me trading my 12 Apex for a Viper.
Too bad you couldn't get tripple exhaust on the 3 cylinder, that would be the best sounding sled ever!!! OK , not better than a piped vmaxx4

Ahh the drone. 30mph is where it all happens at 6,000 rpm. Only on a hardpack with light throttle. But the weird thing is its not really motor related. At 20 mph and 6,000 rpm it does not exist. At 40mph and 6,000 rpm it does not exist. Its related to track speed + rpm.
I think it is track, idler and driver related that sets up a harmony with rpm, probably the throttle bodys. Now funny thing is my warrior with the 1.25 had it but less then the Apex with the 1 inch lug its gone. Well it kinda hard to hear it anyway with the excell exhaust.
As I spend less then 1% of my time at 30mph it just an non issue besides the fact its barely noticable to begin with! So the solution is easy go faster or slower.
My old 1000 tripple had it at about the same speed maybe 25mph barley on the throttle. When Cat came out with the quiet track it all but dissapeared.

Ya what is up with that rattle. Every tripple I come across lately sounds like someone threw a bag of rocks into the motor. I did however think my Apex got good mileage. Larger tank then before would be better but the smaller tank still gets 120 miles and I would even agree the tripple is a great trail motor. I have to also say so is the 4. Given a choice the 4 wins!
I have to disagree about the three being a great sounding motor no matter if you tripple piped it or not. The quieter you make it the better it sounds. Silent of course would be the best.

I never got better than 14.5 mpg with my 12 Apex, most of the time worse--wonder if something was wrong? The last time I rode it I was out of gas at 102 miles--OUT . The drone on mine also was bad in really loose snow 20-45 mph--I mean BAD!!!

One poster on here had his mileage drop badly and it was of the EXUP valve cables that broke. Going to check mine this summer along with the donuts but mileage is good and exhaust is quiet.
The day we rode in really wet soft sticky snow my light came on at 75 miles. Surprised me as it always comes on at 90 miles trail riding. At 90 miles when I filled it up I had maybe 4 or 5 liters left so 105 to 110 on that tank. I'd love to have a bigger tank on days like that.
My XTX Apex's issues so far is the smaller tank. I bypassed the slider wear with the Duponts. The drone does not bother me so to this point issues are well very small in the first 3,500 miles. Time will tell if there are more in the future.
Anyway I think then you will be happy with your Viper, larger tank and I think Cat runs the quiet track still. I know if they put the Apex motor in the Cat I would have been way more excited.

I personally do not think 14.5 mpg is bad for a 160 hp sled. As far as the Exup goes, Mr. Sled made an awesome video a few weeks ago on how to check and adjust this valve.
