Americans and their love affair with hand guns. LOL! To us Canadians who live our lives without them, carrying of them seems kinda alien! First thing we think of is why? How bad is life that a gun in my pocket is needed? Do people live in that much fear that a weapon makes them feel safer?
Course on the other hand if I could carry a hand gun I probably would! Kind of a flip flop deal! But we deal with Moose, Deer, Wolves on a daily basis! Never felt the need to shot one or wished I had a gun because of one. Unless it is hunting season then Moose are meat and Deer are sausage. Wolves are just the cleanup crew. Leave me alone I leave them alone.
The moose has its ears back, its hackles up, its posture is defensive. Advancing is dumb! The video shows that this moose has been up the trail once and back down before the vid starts. Sure looks like two sets of tracks to me. The video is cropped so we do not know what happened before this. We do not know how far that the Moose has run before turning to defend. We don't know how far its been pushed. Snow is deep by the looks of it and the Moose feels threatened for some reason. After the first charge in the vid the Moose backs off and then the sled advances. The Moose looks left and then right like its looking for a way out. With the sled advancing it defends in the only way it knows how.
Always easy to say after the fact but I would not have advanced on it. It just looked like it was making its last stand. All the alarm bells are going off when I see this and I've coaxed a few Moose off the trail in my time and hunted them all my life!
In Manitoba at a TY I followed behind one that had turned on a few of the group and charged them after it had been surprised and had a swarm of sleds on its heals. By the time I got to the front of the group it had calmed down a bit. Its ears where standing up and its hair was laid back down again so I just followed it back a bit, it stopped a couple times but showed no aggression so I just stopped when it did. It turned and looked at me with its ears up listening and then calmly walked off the trail. We all passed! No drama!
I have had Moose turn and stand facing me because I scared them or they where protecting their young or just in Rut thinking I/m a rival. In all cases they looked like that one. Just plain scared and on the defensive. Attack at any sign of aggression! Good sign to back off and leave it alone till it calms down. Following it and trying to scare it even more is dumb! Its already scared! Shooting it because your in a hurry does not cut it! It didn't have to die, what a waste!
Having said all that I think the thing that pisses me off about all this is none of the above. Its the shooting of the animal then not finishing it off. As he moved up beside it a couple rounds in the head would have done it at that range and could have been done safely. Pretty sure that gun has more then a few rounds left. Leaving an animal to suffer goes against everything I was brought up to respect. You shot it you make sure its dead.
K end of Rant! Bet he crapped himself!

Charlie, I was there at that TY and saw everything. We did exactly what we should have done and you explained it perfectly. There was no harm to the animal and nobody got hurt.

Well said Sasquatch. This is a gene pool issue.
Rigidone, I am glad you did not have a gun. Fear can compound quickly, you are all alive to tell this hurtful story. Had you carried, could you garantee the same result. I know this is hurts and causes great anger but cooler heads prevail. My heart goes out to you and your family, but you are carrying for the wrong reason. I do support the death penalty for people like this though. In Texas with you having three or more accountable witnesses, these morons would qualify for the express lane. Stiffer punishments including full frontal labodamys. Gene pool cleansing.

It is for sure cultural issues here Rigidone I am very sorry to hear of that happening to you and yes I would do the same in that instance. I sleep with a baseball bat and a knife beside the bed in storage just in case. If the laws were a little more slack here I would own a gun as well. (I am working on it). Would I carry it snowmobiling...no but I guess in your case you have had a bad experience and if you were carrying might have been different. The laws around here are different and I am not so accustomed to people carrying around me so I guess that kind of makes me nervous to see as I don't trust people. Clearly we live in a society where we all need to look out for ourselves and ours. Keep family and those we trust close and keep the fight against the aggressors and disgusting human beings that we see in the news who apparently live all around us.

The guy should have never let the video out. That was another of his BIG mistakes. To me it looks like this Joe Schmoe was a city slicker with not much experience with wild game… I mean you can wave your arms at a Deer and they're generally going to take off. But Moose? come on… Really? You don't know what the hell a Moose will do. This guy put himself into this situation. He thought if he pushed, the Moose would take a few steps to the side. If your going to Carry your first obligation is to try to back out of all confrontations. If it's not Moose season you shouldn't shoot a Moose. I've been hunting my whole life, and I place this video in the wrong column. Obviously this Moose did not know that Snowmobiles have the right away. And if this guy knew anything about Moose he would have known that Moose can be pissed off quite easily.
Hopefully this isn't a common thing and Moose and Humans can learn something from this tragic event. Hopefully this animal found its way onto a dinner plate.

I would have charged too they were riding ski-doo's
in defence of the moose they could have backed off instead of riding up the moose's butt...

Maybe their brakes didn't work? They should have just stopped as soon as they saw it and waited for the moose to leave. It was running away. At least they didn't go 50 cent on it like the first one. Leave it alone it will go away.

Much better outcome, but this animal reacted exactly the way they do when they feel threatened. These sledders could have backed off way earlier to avoid the confrontation they provoked. Any animal no matter how big or small will fight back when cornered or harassed in this manner. I've hunted and harvested moose for over 35 years and have developed a total respect for these animals.

Sorry guys, guy could have avoided it. I come up on animals, they get right away even if I have to wait an hour. He had plenty of time to avoid the situation, so tHis guy broke the rules of carrying, he will be charged.
Btw, when, where and how is thought at our house. Son 15, daughter 12, wife 23 and myself all shoot! Okay, I might be lieing about my wife's age...
