Trouble Idling on 05 RX1....any ideas?

Hey guys,

Had my RX1 in pieces for the past few months cleaning, changing it over to all black. I haven't started it since early September and even then it fired up with no problems.

I went to fire it today and it wouldn't run without choke and at FULL choke it idled really high (4000 RPM) so I would back the choke off and it would die out. Only after doing this about 5 times and keeping the choke on for about 1 minute was I able to keep it running. Even after it was warmed up and idling on it's own it felt like it was idling rough....any ideas? Could it be as simple as plugs? Fuel Stabilizer is in there with a full tank of fuel AND Fitch Catalysts so i don't think it's the fuel. I am wondering about crap in the carb jets....I hope not what a PITA


I remember back to my 2003 RX1 and all I ever needed was choke on to fire then I would immediately shut the choke off and it ran fine and smooth no matter what the conditions. I can't ever remeber having this problem before.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. I NEVER start the sled unless I let it warm up to operating temperature. It's kind of buggin me because it never did this before. :?

could it be the TORS acting up? Try unplugging them and see what happens.

Same problem i have with my 03 this year starts with the choke on but runs like crap dies when i let off the choke. I'm betting on the carbs it's at the dealer now I'll let ya know what he finds

Just wondering would a carb cleaner work like the ones you spray into the carb while the engine is running?

2 things to check
Plugged pilot jet
Make sure the carb boots are securely on the carb flanges.

Did bypassing the TORS fix your problem. If not, check the pilot jets if they are clogged with dirt. They are real small like 17.5 and get clogged easily. I would try a new set of plugs first tho, a lot easier than taking carbs apart.

Sometimes mine runs a little rough after sitting around for a length of time. I sometimes run isopropylene alcohol (fuel injection cleaner) which seems to keep the carbs clean and running smooth. I’ve never had to fiddle with my carbs and they always cleared themselves out. (knock on wood I guess)
In the summer I usually take my clutch off (or belt) which lets me rev it up without spinning the drivetrain. I also think a good run on the trails with a cleaner will clean it out for sure if gummy carbs are the problem.

The only time I seen plugs foul is when they get flooded. Other then that they seem to last forever.

Had to crank both of mine with full choke for about 20 sec then they both fired up and purred. Started mine once during the summer had to do the same thing then to get them going.

Make sure the carb boots are securely on the carb flanges.

Turk....Funny you say this because I just put the airbox back on again....I guess I will need to re-check it. Dano, I have never had a carb problem either...knock on wood.

I am going out to check the airbox & plugs

If not these 2...then probably carbs....(hope not)

UPDATE:

I just pulled the plugs.....think these are the culprits??? They look pretty BLACK to me..... :shock:

I would guess that's it. While I'm there I will install my CR10EK's tonight. The airbox seemed to be fine. If this doesn't do it, then I will do the carbs.

PS....not the TORS...had that problem before and there was no backfiring or missing...just rough idle.

Pilot jets on the 4 stroke are extremely tiny. My dealer thinks that stable or sea foam may not be enough. Told me to be sure to run em dry and then get rid of whats left with those little bleed screws at the bottom of the carb.

...Simich... My 05 did the exact same thing. Took it to the dealer and they cleaned the carbs and put in all new plugs. Cost me $110. Got it heme to take it off the trailer, it did the same thing. It's going back tomorrow and he said no matter what it takes to fix it, it won't cost me a dime. I will let you know what they come up with. I have the CPR filter kit on it. But thats not what is causing the problem. I put 900 miles on the kit last year and it ran perfect. My friends think it's a lean condition... Gary.
