how bout some info from the blue crew
i went with my son to look at the vector 2005, i think he should wait for the 2006 and pay a little more. my ? is the 2006 going to be that much better or is he ok with the 2005. i dont know yamaha at all, but they look very well built. how about some real pros and cons, from you people in the know. thanks

If he can live without the new seat (taller and includes storage) then an 05 would make more sense if he wants a 151.
If he wants the 162 - the 06 is the only choice then.

In my opinion (take it for what it is worth) I would not buy the Vector SE for High Altitide (9k+) running without putting NOS or a turbo/super charger on it. Just my opinion though...... Maybe it works great, I'm sure their selling it for a reason.

For ~1000$ extra he can get a mountain apex, which will blow both the 05 and 06 vector out of the water. Very sweet mountain sled. What more could you ask for other than some weight loss and maybe a turbo.

just wonder why the vector wouldn't be good in high altitudes? What stock sled works better? 3% hp loss for every 1,000 feet up
so when I ride at 10,000 feet - I have 30% less hp than someone who rides at sea level
The vector with the 151 works fine at altitude - I have ridden them side by side with my RX1. But a 162x16x2.25 track may be a bit much for that sled in my opinion (speculation until I get to ride one). As I said it may work just fine, since the Vector motor has a broad torque range - I may pull that track like a tractor.....

I don't think the four strokes lose as much power with elevatin as the 2 strokes. not sure on the #'s though.

You can re-jet to help compensate - but the problem is the lack of Oxygen for combustion. All naturally aspirated engines will not make the same hp at higher altitude (lack of oxygen).
World class runners/athletes train at altitude - their bodies get used to running on less oxygen, then when they compete at lower altitudes they get a 'boost' from the increased oxygen at sea level.
I went to college at the University of Wyoming - elevation 7200 feet - a different kind of home field advantage!

Fuel injected Apex 162 is my first choise. You did not mention if this is his first sled or not. How much experience he has. If he has none just get a used Yamaha 700 mtn for him to learn on for a year and let him make all the stupid mistakes on a $3,000 sled. Who knows may be next year will bring a turbo, or a left over apex for lots less $$
