on trail fixes
almost everything can be fixed trailside. we have had entire skids out and back in in no time all done by flashlight. if you are familiar with the sled all is possible. I've had my chain case apart a few times and upon re-assembly I forgot the inner seal behind the jack shaft bearing causing to re do it took 10 min. then upon second re-assembly did'nt put the case cover gasket on and did not realize until i was bolting on the brake caliper ( another 10 min) so after a few "f"-ups I can dis-assemble and re-assemble that are blindfolded now. too many hands while wrenching can be worse than not enough too. Bring lots of tools and a chain and gears just in case. if it is the axle be ready to tow her home, so bring a second yamaha along for the task. Good luck!!

i like the zip tie concept, thanks
a buddy offered up his extra sled (apex mtn) and we're heading in (2 guys / 2 sleds), if i had more time tonight i'd walk in just to keep it real, yeah right! as a side note the mountains have gotten another 12" plus since the sled went down!
i also plan to check the reverse lever!

Update...
Sled is out of the hills!
Thanks for all the help, however during this post discussion i managed to 'tweak' the moderators over on TY and will most likely be pulled from the website.
so i'm waiting to tell my tale, but lots was learned and it was epic!

I think we've kissed, but not sure if we've made up?
I just like saying it, the sled is out... so a few details, perfect afternoon mid 20's lot of sun and no wind, however the mtns had gotten just over 12" of new snow over night with a touch of wind. 2 guys, 2 sleds (polaris 800 and a apex mtn) i took in the apex and had forgotten about the engine break and free wheel feature yeehaw! so i broke trail in relearning how to ride, also forgot how much i dislike the maverick track. about a 1/2 mile from my sled i bury the apex, the beginning of a lot of digging! anyhow we get moving again and get to the sled, she's settled down about 18" but my old track had setup a little below the new snow. a recap of the location of the sled is in 8 miles total, 4 miles of semi packed snowmobile trail, 2 miles of semi not packed trail, 2 miles of non packed.
the sled fires right up and i work the forward and reverse lever... the track still doesn't move. so we flip it over and the track free spins by hand... is this good or back? No oil either? it's at this point we discuss tearing apart the chain case or attempt pulling it out, beautiful afternoon... we decided to start pulling and line out the sled and tie everything together polaris pulling apex pulling rx1 (broken) and go... rope snaps. what the ... we walk back the rx1 and the track is not spinning now, this is after is spun free 10+ revolutions on it's side. so i'm thinking is it the chain did it slide down once the sled was upright? anyway i had brought a small kids sled so we ratchet strapped it onto the track and began a 3 hour quest to move the rx1 slightly up hill for a 1/2 mile, great only 1.5 miles of unpacked relatively flat trail to go. lots more getting stuck resetting ropes, digging, pulling on skis, did i mention digging and pulling on skis and getting stuck.
to make a long story shorter we hit our groove about dark and started sailing, nearly missed rolling the rx1 over embankments. both sled were necessary to make progress and stay in control but we made it to the parking lot all in one piece! it was a long hard afternoon and evening and after winching the sled onto the trailer i had no energy to start working on it, so it sits on the trailer, the work begins tonight!

Good to hear you got it out in one piece. I've heard lots of tales of sled getting buzzard picked or stolen when left out overnight in the hills.

The plastic kid's sled is a god idea, and I know a lot of guys that carry one of the small plastic "roll-up" sleds with their gear and either tie it on with string, or a few small bungees. it can be hard to keep it going straight though!
A few years ago on a TY Muni ride, a couple fella's turned the sled around backwards and towed it like a tow truck with the track sitting on the back bumper of a Warrior, and the downed rider stood on the skis of the dead sled and steered it! Funniest thing the dozen or so of us saw in a long time, but it worked! (thanks for the entertainment Maim!)

Maim,
Yes, the cat was fun....A little reluctant at first but it settled in finally.
Freelheeler,
That certainly is a lucky break! (pun intended)

spent friday working on the sled and it was the chain and only the chain, thankfully
close inspection of the chain case showed damage but no cracks, it looks like the chain blew apart and hit real close to the lower right bolt one of the stronger areas. there's a nice groove around the bottom but its going to work.
i had ordered a chain (70t) earlier in the week betting on it and it worked out great except i've been running a (68t) and could remember! so there i am so close to being up and running and the damn chain is too long for my 18/40 gearing? i'd done the math talked to the shop and was convinced the 70t is what i had so i recounted the lower gear and it's only a 39t! which makes sense that my clutching never feels like as strong as it should and i'm fighting to keep rpm's at 10,200 it the deep.
so i took it to a machinist buddy's and we took out a link and i put it back together. having it the garage i went thru the everything and it looks good. took it out yesterday and she ran great but the snow is deep so i got to do a bit more digging. when was the last time you had a sled buried below the snow and had a create a 'ramp' to 'drive' up out of!
