Warning, -16 late build Viper turbo breakdowns, bad rods.

Does anyone know if something else has changed regarding the 16' Vipers except the motor itself? I am doing an engine swap, but is the ignition any different?
Do I also need to change the ECU?
I am swapping engine from 2015 xtx Viper to my MTX.

Thanks for any answers

The chain case and jackshaft are different.

What I find of interest is MPI has to do the reliability testing for Yamaha that includes a very long wide open on the dyno test, something like 15 minutes? Anybody remember the exact amount (doesn't really matter though)

I am not doubting what you are saying Sunvang, just the reason why. MPI does not have an issue at 235hp but MCX blows at 190hp. Sounds like more to this than meets the eye.

I don't mean to be rude, but im not really paying attention to your posts anymore. Every chance you get, you seem to write something to discriminate McXpress. I know you had some bad experience with a MCX box, but you can't base all of their products on that.

I think you would be surprised to see how many kits MCX sells in Scandinavia each year, and how they are known for very good reliability, performance and customer support.

From MPI Turbo

Hello,

The MPI Viper turbo is continuously durability tested by Yamaha, It is retested exactly for this reason, and almost every model year has changes. The “New” 2016 motor was in testing last year. Fortunately these changes which include Rods, Crank, Head, etc are new to the consumer this year, but were fully covered in durability testing last season (one of the advantages of the Factory Yamaha relationship). We have no opinion as to the new components at HP level above 240HP. We have ALWAYS maintained that it was/is not advisable to operate this motor in “stock form” above 240HP. Since the 1st generation of this motor in 2004/2005 season, we have advised modifications for HP levels above 240HP (after market rods, head studs, etc). Our stance on the 2016 Viper motor is that the 190HP Yamaha version as well as the Stage 1 upgrade is “Reliable” with a stock motor. Durability data backs this claim. We consider Stage 1 with pump kit and 4th injector kit to be 235HP (examples: 10PSI at Sea-level and 14PSI at 10,000ft).

Mpi says in the sales annonce that it is possible with 270hp, but in the text above its not recomended with more than 240hp ???

Sunvang, I totally agree. Stingray719, you've made your point. Time to move on. It does not benefit the conversation. MCxpress is a highly reputable company that has been in the turbo game a long time. For those who have not been around since the beginning (2002), MCxpress and Bender were the pioneers when it came to Yamaha 4 stroke turbo systems. The MCx system was well engineered and next to bulletproof while the Bender system went extinct, and the remaining original Bender examples continue to frustrate owners to this day. MCx had experience with motorcycle turbo charging and were able to draw from that. They were so far ahead of Bender when it came to the RX1 kits. Well engineered intercoolers, ingenious boost sensing and fuel system, billet oil scavenge pump, and a real muffler. Back then MPI brought a supercharger system to market and was anti turbo for over a decade.

Just spoke to my dealer,

I have a late build '16 xtx le

Brand new 0 miles (didn't even get to register it yet)

Would trade it for an early build ltx le
For a grand....

What you guys think? Go for the early build proven motor???
I wouldn't unless you are going to boost it ........

I wouldn't unless you are going to boost it ........
The plan was to ride it n/a this year and boost it next season.... But you know how we are sometimes when it comes to toys....

I have an MCX 200 kit on my 12 Apex. It has a back on throttle lean stumble that we can not tune out. The problem has been talked about in here many times with other peoples kits as well.
When I talked to Eric about it he said he had never heard of the problem before?
MPI has had there fair share of problems as well with there supercharger's and a recent Turbo issue!
I'am very satisfied with my MCX kit otherwise and it makes around 12hp/lb boost!
My point is no one is immune to issue's in this game!

This don't make sense.why would Yamaha need to make the rod stronger just to go to 240hp.Sounds like Yamaha already knew that the new rods are weak.

I agree that stingray has a bias but his point is valid. One turbo vendor is saying there are problems while the other isn't having any. Not sure which company is right, but the differing opinions are something to note!

Not sure if this will help, but on the MCX I had issues with I put an automotive boost enabled fuel pressure switch and turned fuel pressure up until the lean spot was gone.
