Warning, -16 late build Viper turbo breakdowns, bad rods.

Just spoke to my dealer,

I have a late build '16 xtx le

Brand new 0 miles (didn't even get to register it yet)

Would trade it for an early build ltx le
For a grand....

What you guys think? Go for the early build proven motor???
No. I would trust Yamaha to do the right thing and stand by the motors even long after warranty is over. As long as you arent doing something crazy with motor they are going to take care of any issues and if you are planning to go full build with crazy hp then the right thing to do is use aftermarket proven components anyway.

Maybe Yamaha will surprise us all and instead of going Turbo stroke the motor and give us 180hp that way. By stroking the motor and using the shorter rods it would have just as quick if not faster acceleration. I know for sure the Plastic is redesigned for next year. Dont know what its going on though.

In a heartbeat, at least you can ride with confidence. At first I thought I would suffer on a resale but now these early builds are like gold.

Its not just the engine thats new on the 2016. New driveshaft, some modeficantions in the gearbox.

Wow i deffinately have some thinking to do.

Peice of mind is deffinately priceless...

So the early (2016) build have everything new except the actuat engine right?

Dont forget the old motor has a different starter gear, sounds like a bit less hp also. Either issue is going to mean downtime and dealing with Yamaha. Yes a rod going is more serious but really it isnt any different as long as Yamaha is covering it and doing the work.

Do we think that the sleds that are left somewhat stock will have problems with the rods ?

Honestly as quick as this happened to the High Hp guys. Yes I believe it will happen to some stockers. All depends on time and use. Maybe it was just a bad batch destined for Europe. They will be able to track that. We just dont know.

Yes im asking the same thing
I woud like to put a exhaust an a pcv and air box mod i hope that the motor will suport this little mod

From MPI Turbo

Hello,

The MPI Viper turbo is continuously durability tested by Yamaha, It is retested exactly for this reason, and almost every model year has changes. The “New” 2016 motor was in testing last year. Fortunately these changes which include Rods, Crank, Head, etc are new to the consumer this year, but were fully covered in durability testing last season (one of the advantages of the Factory Yamaha relationship). We have no opinion as to the new components at HP level above 240HP. We have ALWAYS maintained that it was/is not advisable to operate this motor in “stock form” above 240HP. Since the 1st generation of this motor in 2004/2005 season, we have advised modifications for HP levels above 240HP (after market rods, head studs, etc). Our stance on the 2016 Viper motor is that the 190HP Yamaha version as well as the Stage 1 upgrade is “Reliable” with a stock motor. Durability data backs this claim. We consider Stage 1 with pump kit and 4th injector kit to be 235HP (examples: 10PSI at Sea-level and 14PSI at 10,000ft).

When the motor with the 190hp kit was tested, they put it into a real stress test. They were running it at WOT for about a minute before it blew. Even if nobody rides at WOT for a minute, i still think the test is valid.
