Warning, -16 late build Viper turbo breakdowns, bad rods.

In Norway we have to purchase new steel rods for our 2016 Vipers with turbo.
MCX are delivering these, and the local Yamaha dealer are putting them in.
Can't wait to get the sled up and running with new rods so i can test it properly with some boost!

So you're saying YOU have to pay for the rods and install???

Jess. The norwegian Yamaha importer does not offer a warranty on boosted sleds, so we have to pay fore everything ourselves.
For me, it will cost 1120 $ for new rods, and the work to put them in...

Update: so today I got the call from my dealer. He will be delivering my sled to me on Friday. Yamaha has no official response to this problem yet but they told him to give me my sled and they will deal with it if anything goes wrong. He told me that the problem was in the programmers allowing too much boost and that's why some vipers were failing. He said it was sent out to be reprogrammed and it won't be a problem. On speaking to someone in the know, this is not the case. The sleds have bad rods...bottom line. I will be insisting that Yamaha, at very least, offer me three year warranty on my motor or replace the rods after the season assuming nothing goes wrong this winter. I have faith Yamaha will do the right thing since this is a public relations nightmare for them at this point. Yamaha riders are as loyal as I have been all my life ( min 20 machines purchased ) and yamaha knows brand loyalty is where they make money. So..... I'm going to ride the crap out of it and make sure I have a tow rope on board. Wish me luck

What kind of rods are you talking about ? The Taiwan (swe) rods from mcx? I thought he was still waiting on that?

Who is changing the rods for you? and what do they charge for work only?

Thanks

my buddy got a call today from yamaha telling him to ride his spring order trail 180 kit sled, they told him they belive it is a bad batch of
rods only
in certain sleds and they are working on finding out which sleds are affected and thats right from yamaha...
That would be great if that's the case and they can identify each unit affected. Hopefully mine is not one of them and I can rest easy. If it is then install me some new rods and all is good in the world.

I'd beat the snot out of it until a rod is sticking out the side of the block and if that happens get a whole new engine. It seems they are covering this. But that's just me, I've never been very cautious

I hear ya!

X3 unless you know for sure the tech working on it has done 4stroke overhauls before. List is pretty small of the people I would trust to do my motor.

Well the yxz 1000r side by side have the same problem (same rod). If its a bad batch its needs to be a pritty big batch.

Yikes!! Sorry to hear that.

The diffrence between Scandinavia and US is that here in Scandinavia Yamaha doesn't offer an "Yamaha Turbo kit".
And almost every kind of modification is forbidden by our countries regulations, especially adding power, since they are registred with a specific power and weight, and insurance companies base the cost to insure the sleds based on power to weight ratio, not many insurance companies will insure sleds with turbo's since they in practice are illegal.
