Tried searching but didn't find much on this. What problem is associated with the starter and reduction gears? My warranty runs out in a month so I'd like to know if there's an update that I should have addressed before it runs out.

The cheapo one way bearing assembly is feeding torque back to the starter. The resulting shock is internally mis-aligning the brush assembly, causing at best, a no start. On some sleds, the bearing gets into the reduction drive and destroys part of the engine.

Some sort of fix from Yamaha is being worked on. But it will likely be a "production update". I don't expect they'll update people till they break.
