what kind of studs and how many for 121's and 136's

Rex, I purchased the same pre punched Ripsaw with the studs in the very middle and have had no issues to date with either the track or studs and it hooks up extremely well and i don't drive it easy.

Just what I have found in 2000km, i know you put on allot of k's though.

Is that on an 05 RX-1?

BLUE BY YOU
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ON RUNNING ONLY 96 STUDS, ESPECIALLY
ON HIGH HORSEPOWER SLEDS. CASE IN POINT, HAD A FRIEND WITH A 96 VMAX 600 THAT RIPPED OUT A NUMBER OF THEM AND RUINED THE TRACK, HEAVY THROTTLE GUY. THE CORRECT ANSWER IS EQUAL TO YOUR STYLE OF RIDING.
HEAVY THROTTLE MEANS MORE STUDS OR BYBY GOES THE TRACK IN A SHORT TIME. I HAVE OWNED 36 MACHINES NEVER LOST A STUD, HAVE RIDDEN SLEDS UPWARDS OF 6800 MILES SAME TRACK, SAME STUDS. ALWAYS RAN 144 OR 196 AND ALWAYS STUDDED THE OUTER BELT AS WELL.

Hey ReX,

No that was on my 03 with the old suspension, so i am not sure how the middle shock would affect the track or studs. I don't believe there would be and issue those double backers from woody's are pretty impressive IMO. [/quote]

Actually the issue is specifically with the mono-shock suspension. The back end of the shock absorber is extremely close to the track - so close that when riding the track often touches the shock.

I didn't have studs installed and my shock is worn almost through to the bearing where the track touches it. My track is also worn down to the internal fibers where it rubs. I suspect as the track fatigues it pulls in more and more at the center under acceleration and rubs harder. My track was also stretched during the w-arm failures which may have aggravated the problem.

There have also been postings where people have found annoying rattling sounds when studs are installed in the very center of the track as well as others complaining of shock wear.

Here is one example:

yikes sorry ReX, that sure doesn't sound like normal operation of the rear suspension. I remember reading some of the problems that you were having during the season. Hopefully you get it worked out.

The track rubbing on the shock is "normal operation" for the 05 RX-1.

Its simply the suspension geometry. Basically they need to get the shock to connect as high as possible to the rear arm in order to reduce the loads through the shock (and the pivot arms). Yamaha has "optimized" it so the track "just" touches it in certain suspension compression states and is very, very close the rest of the time.

Under power the track is under tension at the top so it flexes inwards between the two upper idlers and hits the shock more.

If you take a look at any 05 you'll see wear marks on the track and the rear of the shock at the top.

I'm not saying this is a catastrophic problem, but it is something we need to at least think about when studding. It's possible the studs will simply ride over the shock just like the track itself and there may be little difference to shock/track wear with/without studs. I don't know.

I also don't know if the geometry is tweaked on the 06 to improve the clearances. It might be.

Maybe someone with an 06 can check the clearance with and without a little weight on the seat.

Well guys, I'm going to experiment with Camoplasts new Ice Ripper track. Same as Ripsaw with 288 prestudded tips. Has anyone had experience with the 1 inch version they had out last year? It was called the Ice claw. The idea is the equal amount of traction with overall weight the same as unstudded. What do you think? studdog

I have a buddy who works for Camoplast, and he is currently in the process of getting one of these exact tracts for me to try out this winter (HE WORKS FOR R@D DEPARTMENT).. I should know fairly soon i hope..

Welterracer, Please keep me posted. If you have a chance, ask your friend what their quality experience was with Ice claw (1 inch) version last year. One guy spoke of a delamination problem. Thanks studdog
