I have many favorite rides. Locally around Duluth Up the North shore over to Trestle inn then Isabella, Yukon trail to Two harbors and back down the North shore 220 miles great if you are early and the trails not to beat up.
220 miles in a day at or under 50 mph is a long day thats why I do not ride in Minnesota - And they do enforce it!!!!
Speed Limits
It is unlawful to operate a snowmobile in excess of:
•
50 MPH on any public lands or waters
• the posted speed limits on a trail
• a speed greater than various trail, terrain and visibility
conditions dictate
• the posted road speed limit or
50 MPH, whichever is LOWER, while operating
in the ditch
• any governmental unit snowmobile speed limit. Governmental
units include any city, county, municipality, township, or
conservation district.
A county may enact a daytime 65 MPH speed limit for marked trails on frozen
lakes that are over 10,000 acres. The county would need to pass an ordinance
and receive approval by the DNR Commissioner. Individual counties will have more
information on the location and status of any designated 65 MPH trails.

Larry, the Best trail riding I've ever done was going out of SSM Ontario, Canada. Best trails, less traffic, only problem is the cost of the trial permit, the exchange rate is in the US favor which helps. SSM Canada isn't that far to drive which makes it easy to get to, just need your passport and have no DUI problems.
Quebec is another great area, just north of Hull Ontario , long drive but awesome trails.

I must admit to exceeding that often, fortunately THE DNR always sets up in the same place south of the RR tracks and although it is a tempting straight stretch we keep it down there. I ride mostly for the wooded twisties and up/down slopes, views and drops respectively. In those areas have not seen DNR and your speed is down anyway.
Wait these are crappy trails, you don't want to ride there ..............LOL that way they will stay smooth longer. The ride back can be a suspension test.

I used to have a cabin in Britt right on the taconite trail. 1st ride ever on a Polaris 550 fan 2 up I got a ticket 5 mins from the shack for 57 mph. I have gotten 3 more up there and will never ride in MN again. It is so confusing when you ride a trail its 50 when the marked trail parallels the road they call it ditch and then it is the road speed limit so the cars are not freaked out by sleds 100 feet away going faster than the 35 mph posted road limit.
4 yrs ago I had friends up and the gys 37 yr old wife was on my attack and she was not used to it. she swerved to not run into a sled that had stopped short in front of her and a DNR guy was behind us. He pulled her over gave her a $375 ticket for reckless driving and not having taken the snowmobile safety course at the time she was 1 yr under the cut off. He made her ride 2 up and leave the sled 30 miles from the cabin And I had to go back and get it with the trailer later.
But it is a beautiful place to ride.

Larry, in lieu of passport you can get an enhanced MI drivers license to enter into Canada. Cheaper and alot easier to get.

Rob, I might be better off hoping to meet one of those Canadians to ride a week with go pro for memories, can you. Get that enhanced license at DMV?

see and the best trip we have had was a few years ago up to Brainard when they had the best snow they have had in prolly 10 years or more. but then again we did not get harasses by any police. we were warned about them and were careful when it looked like an ambush area. but other than that we just rode as we do anywhere. and that is as hard as the trail will let us.

Wow I have ridden in Mn all my life, one buddy has a speeding ticket otherwise no issues. a couple registration warnings.
Muni,Marquette,BigBay to Houghton is my favorite. If low snow start at Marquette and end at Lanse. Best groomed and rollercoaster ride around Republic. No matter where you go it's almost a guarantee there will be some crummy sections but normally the rest make up for it.
