Who here is running tapp , cvtech, stm or a pro4 primary clutch

So far the Pro-4 has been a great clutch! The 3 arm is on my Sidewinder and the 4 arm is on Shagman's Sidewinder. The 4 arm definitely 60 foots better and has more adjustability. So far, bullet proof
Is the Pro 4 3 arm quiet on the Sidewinder? what do you use for weights and spring? I am currently running your heavy hitters, all of your clutching components primary and secondary on my XTX, TD max 16 with TD header.

Currently running our Heavy Hitter weights (79.45 grams) in the Pro 4 3 arm with a TRA 85/255 spring. Engagement is very low at 2,600, rpms are 9,000 immediately and get pulled down to 8,950 on top end with a top speed of 133mph in a 1/4 mile. Secondary is sidewinder with 33/35 Holeshot helix and our orange spring set at 3-1. This all done with EVO stage 4, stock airbox and EVO captain's choice muffler.

I ordered my first TAPP clutch directly from Dave at TAPP. He's accessible, patient, and very fair. It was great doing business with him. I ordered my second TAPP clutch through Turbo Dynamics so TD and TAPP would both get some business out of it. Looking forward to another outstanding clutch!

Stock clutches work best, check out ulmers track dyno videos
 
Stock Yamaha secondary works just fine for the average rider. Might want to consider upgrading from 400hp north

My stock "adapt" clutch blew apart on me, so looking to change things up. I had the billet cover, but the fixed side broke apart. Honestly I thought it was good to go too but lasted less then 1000 miles.

TAPP primary clutch and be done with it on the 998, its proven on the 998. You will find the TAPP will take everything you can throw at it for trail use. I've seen you are running a 350 MCX setup on HCS. I can tell you that I have seen the STM secondary clutch crack on the 3 cylinder Yamaha on my buddies machine. He replaced it with a Pro-4 secondary clutch and it is beefier than the STM secondary is. The STM primary tends to wear out quickly on a 3 cylinder trail sled. The dont recommend it for trail use on the 1200 Doo or the 998 or 105 Yamahas. The three cylinder harmonics is very hard on the the STM primaries and rattles the crap out of them. If your secondary is good, I wouldn't be afraid to use that, otherwise stick with a Pro-4 or TAPP secondary. That said, the TAPP secondary hasn't had any actual usage put on it yet in the publics hands either, but just judging but looks and the primaries reputation, I'd expect it to perform well and last.

I did call STM, since I live down the road from them, to ask them about the 3 cylinder warning and they said their new WSP versions of the Rage are fine on the 998 and its really Skidoos that still have issues, but who knows.

I got a quote from Tapp too, Ill probably be going that route. PEFI and TD both recommended Tapp when I called them for opinions.

It really depends on how much tuning you can or are willing to do.
The Tapp out of the box will work well, it has so many points of adjustment that a good tuner can make it work much better.
Weight placement is so critical on these 998’s!
I think the stock clutch works well to a certain power level. That said, you really can’t compare the stock clutch to the Tapp, from how it grabs the belt to overall performance… the Tapp is just far superior.

Awww gotcha, thought you were running a sidewinder. The yamaha clutches work real well up to a certain power point of course

Ty4stroke has higher quality content then HCS imo. Others told me to switch to Yammie clutches, but I also have a buddy who was running the stock Yamaha clutches on a Sidewinder and his secondary blew up and killed his primary around ~5000mi with a similar tune to mine.

TAPP is a four arm, comes ready to roll with weight kit too. Myself I like the button primary clutch as its quiet, the roller spider is louder and IMO does nothing better once the button clutch is broke in. The button clutches are sticky for a while when new, then after a few miles, they free up and work very well.

This is true, much better information here. Just add sled to profile and sig so people know its a Cat. Don't use the Yamaha clutches on your high power level machine. Yamaha secondary should be fine though if proper setup/recipe in it. Heal and belt slippage being the killer of any clutch, so if buying clutches anyway, billet TAPPS would be your friend and the way I'd go. What am I saying, I run a TAPP primary on my sled, but still use the stock Winder secondary.

Been waiting a few month for cat to make a decision if they will warranty my cracked primary sheave. Even if they approve I still may go aftermarket and keep the new stock clutch for when I sell the sled.
Who on here is running what? Been going through many threads and it seems Tapp is the most popular.

Who is running one of the aftermarket primaries i mentioned?
How much seat time do you have?
. Is anyone running a team secondary with a aftermarket primary?
I am running hurricane header bundle and 100% trail guy.
Looking for reliability and a clutch that can handle 300++hp. I may do hurricane turbotech upgrade next summer.

Any info would be greatly appreciated and I value your opinion!!

I have thousands of miles on my TAPP primary and use a RW (Ron Ward) kit on my cat secondary. Over the years, I have tried the Pro 4 secondary and numerous clutch parts, springs, weights, etc. I am a trail guy but have had my fun with mod stock turbos and drag racing on the ice against my buddies over the 5 decades of riding. What I look for is low, smooth engagement, minimal belt slippage on the top end and quick acceleration in the mid-range using stock gearing. My current heavily studded "tuned" 998 likes the TAPP and RW set up better than the stock ADAPT clutch set up. It is easy on the belt and trouble free for me. Hope this helps.

PS - I have not tested the new TAPP secondary. I am not sure it's worth the cash, but the company itself is helpful and has been good me as a customer.
