It shouldn't. But I'll tell you these chain cases on the 06 4 cylinders get freaking blast furnace hot. I'd put in Mobil1 full synthetic hypoid gear oil (75-90 wt) or a similar full synthetic.
One of my riding buds says non synthetic has been known to boil out, and I have no reason to disbelieve him.

I use the same oil in the chaincase as in the engine. I add a little more than maxximum on the dipstick because the 0-30 I use is a lot thinner than gear oil. I have not had a single bearing failure in 8000 kms. BTW engine oil can take the heat beeing engine oil, LOL.

WTF?
Engine oil in the chaincase?!?! Sounds loony, but I'm glad it's working out for you.

Its a chain running on cog gears any oil would work ATF oil works too and can take the heat and wont foam up. Synthetic is the way to go as it has better lubricating qualities and because of that it will run cooler.

To the people who wish to wait till fall to change the oil is in my mind foolish. Why do you change oil at all and in the first place? Answer is because it gets contaminated starts to get acidic and break down the oil plus looses some of its lubricating abilty due to very minute particles that will get through any filter. Bottom line is you have to change oil be it in the spring or in the fall. Might as well have your engine sitting in clean fresh oil over the summer and run that oil till next spring until at which time you need to change it again. You gain the benefit of having your engine sitting in fresh oil during storage rather than used by doing it in the spring and you are still only changing your oil once a year.

Why would that be loony???
My old Suzuki GSX750F used the same engine oil for oiling the engine of course, lubricating the gearbox and cooling the engine. It had only one fluid doing it all. Synthetic oil is what I use in both my sleds, works for me.
