Who is using a Wix filter on their Winder? I see the specs for the one that crosses from the Yamaha filter, and it looks like it is taller than the Yammy filter so I'm not sure it'll physically fit in there.
No I'm not advocating one filter over the other, but I can get Wix locally rather than travelling to the nearest Yamaha dealer 40 miles away to get what I need there.

I've been using Wix 51365 forever. It's a little longer than stock filter but fits fine.
I also have Filtermag.

Turboflash, is your number off or did I purchase the wrong filter?

51365 has height of 2.60"
Rest of specs are same. Not sure if 51356 will fit? Might hit front tunnel bulkhead.
I use 51365.

BTW - Wix cross reference actually shows 57040 as direct cross reference. That filter is 2.075" high just like factory filter. But, as I said, I use 51365. It's taller (more filter material) and it fits in space.Uh-oh....I bought a 51356XP.

Good info, TY. I put the 51365xp on order. Funny....the 57040xp is available at all my local parts houses, and the 51365xp is not.BTW - Wix cross reference actually shows 57040 as direct cross reference. So I'll put them both in my notes in the event I get into a bind or something.

Another aside - Wix "XP" filters are designed (and happily marketed for a higher price) to last longer than, say, the standard filter number with no suffix. I don't know how much of it is real vs. just hype for the sake of selling a higher priced filter. Wix's approach is to ride along with all the oil companies who market "extended life" fully synthetic oils which they claim will perform for 10,000 miles or more. Wix marketing says they sell the XP filters to last as long as the extended life oils. In other words, it can get dirty and still do the job. Really?Good info, TY. I put the 51365xp on order. Funny....the 57040xp is available at all my local parts houses, and the 51365xp is not.

1. Does that mean their standard filters won't?
2. Or, is it just a way to get more money out of us?
3. Personally, I have no plans to see how long my $6 oil filter will last, regardless of which oil I use.
4. I change my 998 oil each season (regretfully I only ride 2-3k miles per year). When I drain it, it looks like it's hardly been ran - still amber in color (Amsoil 0W-30 Signature Series).
5. My filter gets changed way before its life is up for sure; no where near what Wix says we need their XP filter for.
6. That said, there is no harm to run XP filters, or any other suffixes they sell, but it's not needed unless one plans on only changing their oil filter every couple years.
7. It sounds like many/most of the local auto parts stores have also jumped on the "extended life" oil and filter bandwagon. They only offer XP filters. Guess why?
8. The non-suffixed Wix 51365 works just fine for me. So would the 51365XP. In all reality, the filter is only in service for a very short period of time (aka if you ride 5,000 miles per year, and you average 40 MPH, your engine runs 125 hours).
9. As I stated above in this thread, I augment my filtration by adding FilterMags to the outside of my filter. What can it hurt? I have cut open my used Wix 51365 filter (in service with FilterMags) to see what, if anything, is attached to inside skin of the filter. I can say there is some "shadowing" on the inside of the outer skin where the magnets are. To be attracted to magnets, these microscopic particles have to contain iron. My conclusion is there are nano particles being shed in engine while running (camshaft, valves, tappers, chains, crankshaft, rods, bearings). Would any oil filter "catch" them? Do the FilterMags catch particles the filter won't? IDK. Only nanotechnology analysis would determine what those particle sizes are. The Wix filter is specified at 21 microns.

The standard Wix filter will catch 99% @ 23 microns, while the XP filters 99% @35 microns....the "XP" means extended performance.....not better performance. Unless you're running 15,000 miles on an oil/filter change....it's not an filter I would use....

Those were test results posted on BITOG......also reported the XP only 50% efficient at 20 microns I believe. They give up efficiency to be able to make the 20,000 mile claim I guess...
