Wont start

Keep in mind newbie here. 2006 Yamaha Venture with 350miles I picked up last year. Rode it one weekend ran fine. Changed the oil/filter winterzed it and syphone tank dry. Put fresh fuel yesterday and it wont start. Cranks over fine but wont catch. I also cant get my headlite to work or my dashboard lites. Was stored in garage all summer. Any ideas?

The fuel pumps are likely dry. you can try pressurizing the tank with an air compressor blowing into the vent tube which is located behind the Secondary clutch. See the picture. You only need to keep a light pressure in there while it's cranking, by blowing into the line then plugging it with your finger. Do not try and blow the tank up like a balloon.

I cant see an attached picture. Maybe you forgot it? The dash board lites and head light should operate with the key on correct? I just got this machine last year in March and only got out on it once so not familiar with it. I checked the fuses in small fuse box right side of machine under the hood up high near handlebars and also checked the two 30 amp fuses to the right of the battery box all are good. I did try a little pressure in the tank by taking the gas cap off cupping my hand over the hole and blowing into the tank thru a hose. We had pressure in the tank but did not do this long as my buddy said the lites should be working and the problem must be elsewhere.

CREWCHIEF47, is spot on! Your float bowls on your carbs are dry. I use an air compressor set at 15psi and blow in the tank for about 5-7 sec if you see your gas cap rising you did to much. plug the hose and set choke . It will still take 15sec or so to start to fire. Once its going put the hose back on . Make sure you warm it up for 10-15 min's or you might fowl a plug. I'm sure your lights will come on when its started.

If that fails check your plugs!

I will try. So you are saying my dash lights and headlights will not work with the key in the on position until engine has started?

Normally I can get my 05 Vector running by placing my hand over each of the carb openings while turning it over. If that doesn't work I use a small spray bottle filled with gas to mist fuel into the openings. I'd recommend lifting the track or removing the belt while trying to get it started. I store mine with the belt removed.

The headlights turn on after the engine is running or you can turn them on by holding the thumb warmer rocker in the down position then turning the key on (don't crank the engine) and waiting 8-10 sec before releasing the rocker. The lights should come on.

That is correct. Your lights will not come on until it is started. You need to pressurized the tank as stated above. If you didn't run the carbs dry before storage, your carb jets may be plugged also.

Yup, blowing in the fuel line vent hose (as posted in the pic) then capping with my thumb does the trick for me. I just put my mouth on it and use my lungs since I don't have a compressor handy.

My 08 Vector is always a bear to start each fall, I will try the compressed air trick myself, thanks.

Just be careful you only need a little pressure,like set your outflow on the compressor as low as it will go or just bleed it in from the nozzle. I actually had the same problem with my sons ski doo and rather than look for the hose and use the compressor, I unscrewed the gas cap, put a rag over the hole and ran a short piece of 1/2 hose a couple inches into the tank. I cupped my hands over the rag and around the hose and pushed down to get a seal and then blew into the hose while my son cranked her over. Worked fine.
