It's a SDI (Semi Direct injection) that I was requested to follow because of plugs fouling. He's on his second or third remap.. Its really too bad because he almost had himself talked out of sledding anymore.
I have noticed that when I am breaking trail or going off trail my milage drops a bit but back up on a trail (packed or groomed) I get 19 mpg easy.

Could it be one or more of the following
1. Major drop in engine Warranty claims with the 4s
2. People are demanding reliable sleds
3. Increasing sales of 4s (Yamaha in particular)
4. All 2S will have a very hard time passing the 2012 EPA regs.
5. Environmentalists like 4S better than 2S.
Never buy a 1st year product

My 04 SDI was BONE STOCK, and in the 5,200 miles I owned it, it blew-up 3 times. I finally parted it out and bought a 500 SS. That went 5,000 miles, and then blew up. Then in the next 300 miles it blew up 3 more time. Bought a XTX, end of story.
The Etec is the same bottom end of a SDI, and they now leaned it out even more and are giving it way less oil. I think it will be a good 2,000 mile engine, but after that ANYTHING could happen!

WOW, you have gone through alot of engines. I would be a very very unhappy snowmobiler if that happened to me. Hopefully you did not have to pay for all of those rebuilds. My fathers and mine phazer did blow up the engine this year. Obviously is extremely rare, dealer said it was a fluke. Many of the parts to rebuild a engine were on back order till late march so we called Yamaha repeatly. In the end Yamaha took a motor off the showroom floor and put into our sled. It was an 08 motor none the less, so it had all the updates and everything. Yes the phazer was down for a few weeks, but Yamaha DID do something about it and got it back to us before the year was over. And of course all the work was done for free. So needless to say Yamaha gave themselves some customers for many more years to come.

Back in January of 04 when my SDI was brand new, I managed to get 1,800 miles on it and it ate the rings. The parts for the rebuild were backordered, and took 50 DAYS to get to my dealer. I was without a sled the whole time, and had great snow.
The following season, It ate the rings again, and they had parts, so it was only down for 2 days. The 3rd year it didn't make it till Christmas, and I SCATTERED-It bad! I'll get pics up on here soon, its hilarious. It broke a rod, and the rod completely broke the case all the way around, broke the lower motor mount plate, cut the oil pump in half, cut the water pump in half, toasted the jugs, smashed the head, sent pieces back into the reeds and shattered the reeds and cage on one side, proibabely trashed the Throttle body, ......Did I mention it was JUNK??? I'll go get pics right now!

I really wonder how Bombadier can have all these engine issues.I know packing the mainbearings with grease is not a good idea and they should realize that with the old Formula III back in 96 it doesnt last. But then I talk to all the guys who have the Evinrudes DI motors and they couldnt be happier.Ton of power and no problems at all. Many of these boat motors are at least 5 years old I believe. What is different? Is it the constant cooling the boats have?

I've rode both th e tec and the nytro. My spring deposit is going to Yamaha! The torque of the Nytro is amazing!! E tec is a nice sled but IMO it's not as powerful as the Nytro. The acceleration is like nite and day.
Like all first year sleds, I'd be wary of the E Tec.

I don't understand why you are even considering it with the results you have experianced. I don't care what anyone says, once you hit 5,000 miles on a Rotax 2-smoke it's only a matter of time before it goes boom. Look at your sled with 7,000, I bet the thought of engine problems is the furthest thing from your mind when you are running down a trail full bore
For me I would consider one because the handling really impressed me.Suspension wasnt too bad either.Really scared of thier motors and reliability though. Will sit this one out and let my buddies buy them. They can test them for me!

The 2 vs. 4 argument can go on until the sun quits shining, but but in my opinion, it comes down to evolution. Sure, the 2s have come a long way, but where can they go from here. I firmly think that ina few more years, you won't be able to buy a 2s anymore. Not because they won't pass emissions or anything like that, I think that as more people demand reliability, and more people look for a better return on their money (in trouble free miles), they will just start buying more 4s, adn the 2s won't have the market..
I also don't think that most people are going to just jump to Yamaha because they are far ahead of the game in 4s technology, but rather buy the 4s in the brand of their choice, I hate to say! It costs alot of money to switch gear and all, and they may not care if they have the most power in their class.
I could be wrong, but of all the 4s out there from all brands, I really haven't heard of too many engine failures. I would rather deal with other quirky issues than worry about an engine coming apart!

Put a big red circle around these words of wisdom above...Nate, I do believe you hit the nail on the head square and true.

I haven't bought branded Jackets or pants in years just for that reason. (Although Gloves, baseball hats and maybe Helmets are another story)

I think that is exactly the reason why. I do know they had a ton of problems in the begining. Just think of how many old and I mean OLD two stroke out-board motors are still running to this day. What kills a two-stroke? Heat! Now if i'm flushing 100*F water through a motor vs. 200*F it has to make a difference.
