My heart truely lives and breathes Yamaha, and this decision was not easy, but Yamaha made the decision to drop the Apex, and therefore they dropped me as well.
Today I experienced a perfect example of how Yamaha has lost ground to SkiDoo:
I rode with a large group of Newbies today, 8 total. 6 of them were riding a stock '09 or '10 SkiDoo Summit and two of them were riding stock '08 Mtn Apex. EVERYBODY got stuck (except me). However, the SkiDoos were stuck FAR less and everyone of the newbies enjoyed riding the SkiDoos more than the Apexes for assorted reasons (they all traded sleds back and forth). Bottom line: The SkiDoos are more stable, easier to ride, and easier to get unstuck for a Newbie than the Apex. That tells me that the SkiDoo is not only is a more capable sled in the powder, but also if it's easier and more fun for a Newbie to ride, then the SkiDoos are going to OUT SELL the Apex and probably the Nytro as well. Yamaha better wake-up and smell the mocha-chino because if they don't, the only Yamaha we'll be able to buy in the future will either have wheels or white and black keys! They'll be completely squeezed out of the sled business by superior competition.
Looking at Ski-doo is looking in the wrong direction if you talking Mountain and of course if you talking to me.
Why the heck is Ski-doo making it heavier? Why do they make it wider? Sway bar on a mountain?
A mountain is narrow, light and easy to boondock. The ski-doo is going toward the Renegade segment (wrong direction). Nope still I think that Cat and Poo are the best out of the box mountains. The Poo's and the Cat's selling less than Ski-doo in the "summit"-segment just meaning that its a more moderate snowmobile... not a better one.
I know that the M is kind of lousy on the trail and I know that RMK is a pain on certain kind of hard snow... But in Powder they rocks, Ski-Doo Summit is a good machine but isnt that much better than a Nytro MTX. Kind of same feeling IMO.
About the selling args... Yamaha is putting it's effort into groomed trail and that is the biggest market. So I don't worry to much for Yamaha.

These companies need to pull there finger out and start making new stuff!
You are too funny, my snowmobile and yours have the roots back in 2003. Mine is a Cat and yours a Yamaha. So what about coming up with something new.
I think Ski-doo is the most aggressive on the market and coming up with most new features in sledding today. Cat has been the leader in that before but now I think Doo is leading the way. Ride forward, electronic reverse, sdi, e-tec, light weight products out of the box, stupid key for steeling protection, etc.
The second most progressive may be Polaris... Meaning Rush, RR and so on. Still I would have chosen a M if I bought one today. Like the old #*$&@ to much!

Doo is leading the way to proper monthly engine failure and daily kinked bodies with their lightweight and also very weak parts. Read the list of stuff I wrote on the first page of this that has happened to guys with brand new Doo's. Polaris is decent but they have a fair amount of engine trouble too. I would say Cat and Yam are more towards the top for reliability.

Last time I checked, a stock Apex Mtn and Nytro MTX both come with a sway bar. And if you think a Nytro MTX and a Summit 'feel the same' then you're not riding in very deep snow. The Nytro is not a bad machine by any means, but a 2008-2011 stock Summit will carve circles around a stock Nytro MTX in the deep stuff. I know because I've ridden both side by side, and I'm a loyal Yamaha rider (used to be anyway). But the bottom line is, comparing stock to stock, a SkiDoo Summit will out preform a Apex Mtn and Nytro MTX in every deep snow test you can throw at them weather it be deep snow manuvering, boondocking, or climbing. Now reliability and toughness may be a different matter, and that remains to be seen, for me at least, I'm snow-checking my new 2011 Summit X today! But I'll keep my modded Apex just in case SkiDoo lets me down in the reliability department.

Man these new Doo's are blowing the motors right out of the box seriously. I'll take a reliable machine before an unreliable one that can just turn better. I can't speak for anyone else on this. I have seen how crappy these machines are. Well they perform insanely compared to other sled but the amount of time they spend in the shop is wayyy too much. The cons here definately outweigh the pros for skidoo XP's.

Agreed!!
I couldn't agree more....if they can just get the damn engines to hold together for 3000+ miles they will be AWESOME sleds....I'm waiting to see CAT put the 800 in the race chassis...that will be an awesome machine and I think in another year it will happen...by then we will know how dependable the Polaris will be.
Skidoo will continue to put out time bombs....if you get a good one it'll last a few thousand miles, if not you'll keep getting new ones until a decent one lasts.
Yamaha.....well they'll continue to chant "the best" , "cutting edge" and have the heaviest, least aggressive machines on the market!! History repeats it's self and they've never changed...bottom line is what matters....not mountain sleds.
I too will be jumping ship next year and if Polaris offered a 4 year warranty. I'll be with them.....if not it will be Cat. Love the Apex engine but I'm getting no younger and it's still WAY to heavy in anything other then powder.

i totally agree with you. looks like yamaha has no interest in the weight of their machines. But! Im buying a 2009 grizzly and on their website wow do they ever use their weight advantage of the machine vs others more than skidoo does. They beat it up and down about how 150lbs is going to save your back, arms and make your trip more comfortable. Yamaha knows they got a heavy machine (sled) but it doesnt sound like there too worried about it like their quads.

LMAO......hahahhahahah.....thanks for the laugh.....everytime I ride my buddies M8 I wonder a little more and a little more what the hell I'm doing riding this submarine! It has nearly the pull down low the Apex has and rips on top....I can throw it around all day and not be sore or beaten after 80 miles in the mountains! OH and it doesn't have that 500 lb weight on a string draggin you down the off camber side hills when the snow get's hard....you can still ride it wiht out it breaking your back and your will to ride....LOL. Yes my fat office job havin azz is gettin soft I guess........LMAO. If I can't get 8000.00 for my Ole girl I'll keep her though as I have so damn much moey in it it aint worth selling below that. I have a few youngsters drooling over it already....I was really hoping Yamaha would drop that 170 h.p. 3 holer in the Nytro but I kow better and I guess I have to finally put down that crack pipe and face reality. Another option might be a higher H.P. Doo in the 4 stroke department.....gonna have to ride it first...that's for sure!

I'd rather wait it out before enduring the chit storm I'm sure to get! Time will tell but gotta give Cat props....dependable and solid Mountain specific sleds that out perform anything Yamaha hands down right out the box. The biggest thing I don't like is not the motor issue's or any of the other bullchit but the smell.....coming home smelling like the dam gas and oil!

Yes Yammie has sway bars and I dont like it on a mountain. Now I saw that Doo is going to have a one click sway bar for next season... That is so good.
About the same kind of feeling doesn't mean that they are identical. The summit and the Nytro is feeling the same in appearance but the Doo is lighter and more powerful. So of course they are different. But the feeling is similar. The M-series Cats doesn't feel anything like a Summit. The RMK I was riding today felt kind of a mixture of XP summit and a Cat. Very good I must say.
