Well, I finally swapped out my 06 cover for the 07 cover on the weekend.
Here are a couple pics, showing the major difference around the bottom (which are at the top in the pics!). You can even see with the arrow where mine was barely touching.

It is still of my opinion that the gaskets CAN NOT be sucked in. It simply doens't make enough contact (as pictured) and allows it to 'weep'.

wow...i can barely see any differences....do you feel the changes will resolve any of the issues some guys had last season?...i guess if i could see it in person I might see it better....

also, what was the cost?..i realize your in canada so it will be CAD..

OK,after looking longer at pics..I do see where the bottom "LEDGE" on the 06 cover looks thinner with less area for gasket to sit on...while the 07 ledge looks to be the same all the way around, and does NOT thin down like the 06....do you feel this is simply why the 06s were leaking in some cases?...just not enough surface for the gasket?....It seems too simple...why hasnt all the guys who had issues came out and said this is what happend?...instead we got alot of guys saying gasket was sucked in,or venting ect ect.....weird.

thanks bud
dan

are all the 06 covers machined the same as far as the thinner ledge is concerned,i had mine apart a few weeks ago and didnt notice the way yours is machine on mine but i have to dig back into it b4 trail riding to loctite bottom sprocket bolt and will check then,no oil leaks last year in 3400 miles tho

Dan, take another look, you can clearly see the black line the gasket left. The line is the contact part and it comes very close to the inner edge of that 'ledge'.

I would assume all 06 covers look like mine.....

I never had an issue either....however I believe most guys who DID have probs were seeing this on long haul HI SPEED running...which somehow must have either created too much vaccum or possible heated up the lube enough to allow seapage??....id love to know the exact cause for sure!...

and Id love to see some super close up pics of that ledge ....It is obvious yammie made this change to the cover to hopefully AID in the issues some had last season...but wow,it seems like they didnt change all that much....

AHHHHHH,...very good!...i now see that black mark left by the gasket....and i see where is was riding near the edge..wow!..

so,now i assume the gasket will have more "ledge" to sit on without being able to fall off the ledge eh?....sounds good.

ok,did you get a new gasket too?..is it same or abit different?..

what was the cost of cover?....and do you simply order an 07 rtx cover?..part numbers are all updated automatic?

thanks
Dan

I assume the cover you order will be the 07 one. The gaskets were exactly the same, so I never took a pic.

you can see it really well when you enlarge the pic, gonna check mine for sure now, thanks for the post and pics

did you add any other 07 parts?..is everything else same as 06?..

no costs of cover?

thanks for pics!

Do you only have to have a problem for Yamaha to replace this, or will they give you a new cover upon request?

Let me add these very important notes!!!!!!!!!!

-make sure to order 2 new DOWEL pins, as one is impossible to remove!!

-order a new seal behind the brake rotor, the old one actually comes out pretty easy though.

-a new bearing too if you want!!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Seems you were kinda close to a failure. Thanks for posting this.

Mine actually only had some weepage. There was always a drop of oil hanging onto the bottom of the cover!

WOW....says alot about Yamaha as a company doesn't it?

Do you think any of the other 3 manufactuers would have made this change that fast? The other guys would have released more sleds with the same covers just to get rid of the extra parts. :o|

I stand by my convitions of Yamahas dedication to quality. The other guys are too busy trying to out do each other with new stickers and stupid ideas while Yamaha spends there time perfecting what they have. Sure we don't have radical new changes EVERY year but it's nice to know these guys spend their time in QA.

:yam:
