'06 Apex sometimes idles low...almost sputtering...

Idle air control valve. It opens and closes teh throttle bodies based on coolant temp, colder it idles higher, warmer it idles lower. If it sticks it will cause the idle to bounce.

Yes, if you mean this, I had mine all apart and cleaned it. There was a bit of scuffing on the inside, but it didn't seem to be hanging up on it at all. Hard to tell for sure. You can't buy the part separate I don't think...and after putting it back together there was no difference in my problem.

TAKE THE AIR CLEANER OFF, LOOK IN THE THROTTLE BODIES CHECK CARBON BLADES FOR CARBON BUILD UP SO BLADES CANT' RETURN TO IDLE [SUCKS TOO MUCH AIR IN] WHEN THE BLADES ARE SHUT [IDLE] USE A SOFT BRISTLE TOOTH BRUSH WITH A THROTTLE BODY CLEANER IT HAPPENS ON CARS ALLTHE TIME. TRY THE SIMPLEST THINGS FIRST Bob

Did you check the TPS. I was told by my dealer that they have been finding some bad ones. I was told that some are intermittent.

I'm having this exact issue. Ever find the cause of your problems??

My 06' did the same thing, I had taken it to the dealer as it was the end of the season and I didn't need it back any time soon. I had told them about the TPS, and that it sounded as though my exhaust was leaking AGAIN. I can't remember if they ended up changing the TPS but I do know they repaired the exhaust and the problem was gone. I sold the sled that summer so I didn't really get too worried about what it was exactly. If memory serves though it was just the exhaust, cracked flex pipes and bad donuts. I know some have said they checked, obviously the symptoms could caused by other problems, I'm just relaying my issue.

I'll have to check that. When I start the machine it fires right up and runs great. After about 5-10 seconds it then starts sputtering or idling rough. It will stay running though. Once warmed up if I tough the throttle at all the idle drops right down to 1000rpm and it almost quits. Also seems to be running very rich as I get some black smoke.

as i stated before the TPS part # changed for a reason. it was upgraded because it was defective. It was explained to me very clearly by Woodies in Topsham Maine that a recall for this part # was done on the motorcycle line because the bike could stall in an intersection or similar situation. this could cause someone to be killed.
On a sled you are usually on a trail in the woods and chances are you won't get killed because of this issue.
We all know yamaha hates to admit problems and with each year slowly improves or repairs the problems they find. All the while never admitting there was even an issue to begin with.

I spoke with a different dealer in maine that had so much trouble chasing down a tps issue on an apex. they spent an entire weekend and replaced multiple parts only to lose thier shirt doing it because they either could not get the TPS to show an issue during testing or didn't believe the TPS was a problem. This same dealer flat out refused to help me with my sled once they realized it might be TPS related.
If you still have YES bring your old tps to your dealer if he services the yamaha motorcycle line he will have the updated TPS part.
Type "yamaha TPS recall" into Google and start reading

Found this on another post and used it to check my TPS. You can check the values of the TPS by going into the diagnostic mode:
-Turn the main switch to "OFF" and set the engine kill switch to "ON".
-Simultaneously press and hold the "SELECT" and "RESET" buttons for 8 sec.
-After selecting "dl", Simultaneously press and hold "SELECT and "RESET" for 2 or more seconds.

You use the "SELECT" and "RESET" buttons to advance or go back through the code number. They are 01 through 70.

TPS is 01.

Use the throttle to see the value. You may have to move the sensor a little to match the correct value.

No throttle: 16%
Full throttle: 96%

I actually came across this diagnostic check and the TPS sensor appears to be fine. One thing I did notice is the sled was running rich. I went in and adjusted my CO value for each cylinder down to -20. Sled seems to idle fine now. Still moves around or jumps around a bit but doesn't idle way down and almost stall anymore. Not sure if I fixed the problem or just covered up another. I have a couple videos of the before and after. If I can figure how I'll post them.

I know it sounds crazy but try lightly heating your tps with a hair dryer when it is running. the idea is to bring it up to a hot temp but don't go crazy like you are trying to cook it. check the diagnostics while you are doing this and see if there are any changes/ fluctuations. this is something my dealer suggested.
the change in temp can sometimes make them act erratic.
My TPS would only act up when the sled was super hot. If i ran it real hard it did not want to idle. once it cooled down some it would straighten itself out. I could never run it in my garage and get it hot enough to cause a problem.

Never thought of that. I'm going to give that a try. So it would be possible to get a good reading through the onboard diagnostics but TPS may act up when the sled is running. Is the onboard diagnostic reading providing you with ohms??
