Why would Yamaha cover this?

How about customer goodwill, I would think that if a good case is made to Yamaha that the failure was due to a defective part that was installed in the engine when new they will agree to fix. Do you think Yamaha wants the public to know that Yamaha sleds may have defective parts in it from the factory and if the part fails after the warranty has run out then it's not their problem?
Companys that hide behind their warranty terms and don't understand that they have defective parts that if know of prior would never have been used but have slipped through their QC procedures will slowly loose customers as word gets around.
Hopefully the owner of the dealership can convince Yamaha the only reason it failed was it was a defective part, he understands that if Yamaha doesn't stand behind this problem then he has lost this customer and possibly others that he tells.

I think the situation is really unfortunate but to be honest Yamaha engines are not going to get the rap that they have rods that will snap in half; too many have run for too long without a hitch.

The sled is 6 years almost 7 model years old, I too would be upset, I probably wouldn't buy another yamaha but I would never expect them to pay for a new engine no matter how many miles it has. Its old and out of warranty your on the hook now.

If your yamaha when do you stop providing service? What if the engine had 10,000 miles would you still be as upset? What if it had 10 miles? At some point they need to cut the cord, in this case it was age before miles.

That said your dealer is the one that actually should help you out, looking at your sig and long list of yammies they can make the business decision to keep you forever loyal or chase you away with what THEY decide.

Yamaha

Bad rap? already have had some bad rap because of all that have read this post. The sled was purchased new 1/09 and this month is 1/12 which is 3 years old not 6 or 7 as you state. Any company worth anything should stand up to this issue as it appears the part they used were defective, 1200 miles of use since new should also a big factor. I wonder how you would handle this same situation if your sled was the one that failed from defective parts, based on your comments you wouldn't even contact Yamaha. We'll see how all this shakes out, were hoping for a fair shake.
The selling dealer is doing everything they can to support their customer.

i can relate to both sides here, but if its out of the warranty period, its out of warranty. knowing how yamaha is, and trust me when i say that they have the best out of warranty "help" out there, there is a chance they might help you. if they do it will certainly not be paid in full and consider it a gift, but anything is better than nothing. i know of many companies that will NOT help you one day after the warranty expires. That being said i wish you the best of luck!

Your correct I wouldn't even think of going to a company asking for a handout when it shouldn't be expected at all.

I do wish you luck, Yamaha has helped others in the past so maybe they will help you with your long yamaha loyalty history.

Good luck!
