07 Phazer seized

I can see how. That one seized real bad one I have here drive gear and reduction are burned but balancer is not. I think in yours its burned one side because thats where it stopped and transfered heat to balancer gear.

07 weight is all machined and machining for nut and splines. 07 balancer definitely would cost more to make.

Might just be a cheaper design 08 up.
I agree, and this has been my theory on why the change was made. Machining the '08+ from a forging would certainly cost less in the long run, but the initial cost of forging may not have been worth doing it from the start, especially without knowing how successful the model would be. Once sales took off and more units were to be manufactured and sold, the 'risk' of investing in forging was probably deemed to be worth the 'reward' of lower costs, and the change was made. Of course, this is just my theory on this particular part, but I really see no other changes to the function or durability of the balance shaft as a result of the changes, only an increase in ease of manufacture and likely profitability as well.

Hey @74Nitro , did you ever get it going again? Curious to see if it's repairable after such a catastrophic failure.

Hi Nitro,
I just picked up an 07 Phazer with 2100 km on it. I've done the mods on the steering and checked the starter. Was there any indication of the impending failure? Is there a way to anticipate this issue? I'm over here in Edmonton and wondering if it would be worth changing out that shaft for a newer one before it grenades?
Thanks,
Gerrit

I found out that there is an affected VIN number range, so you could check with Yamaha on that. there was a bulletin issued way back in 07-08 time.
Also, if the gear set is bad, the machine will make a whining noise, that is not normal.

Hey thanks. I will definitely check into that serial number range.

Is this the whining noise you're talking about?

Its not my video, but I have the same sound on my 07 FX. Its done 6000km.

Noises sound slightly different in videos but I would say yes, it sure sounds like it.

So what needs to be done in order to resolve this?
Remove the primary clutch and then remove the cover behind the primary clutch to access and have a visual of the gears. Since it didn't fail completely like the one I fixed, you should be able to fix everything without engine removal.
