even if they decided to go with the current r1 engine in a new yamaha snowmobile the sled would have class leading power at 182hp naturally aspirated.
combine that with a new lightend chassis better eurgos and handling and yamaha will once again be at the top of the market as they were back in the late 90s with the srx and other sleds. And one thing i can say about yamaha is they never tend to force out a product they do take there time and make sure it performs before releasing it.

Don't think you are seeing anything until the anniversary year. In my opinion you will see a trail option boosted sled, the phazer for next year, then the anniversary sled to replace the apex model. I'm also hearing rumors of a work horse sled somewhere in between to fill voids in Russia, and Europe . Being they are a large market share now. So the five+ sleds we were promised (not in any particular order)
1 viper
2 mountain viper
2-1/2 boosted option viper
3 phazer in a cat chassis. Hearing 90-100hp range
4 work horse sled for other markets (like a Viking)
5 anniversary 170hp apex replacement (maybe a vmax-4) rendition ?
Hence the reason I went Apex this year. Great sled just in case these rumors, aren't true, or the timing gets extended cause of poor sales, and bad winters....

yes we may not see a completely new sled till the 50th anniversary but with the development of the new engines in the last year we could see a couple new engine options become available in the 2016 model lineup (if the apex is included or not) in order to keep sales moving. I dont know if they will release the phazer on a ac chassis due to the fact that a new chassis is being worked on but i could see if getting a facelift along with a more powerful engine and possibly the boosted trail option you speak of available in the viper and the phazer. in regards to the viper tho. i do know that the sled is only meant to be temporary for the time being as development of new product proceeds. now thats not saying they wont keep it but there is a good chance it may be droped in 2017 but more likely in 2018 with the new sleds.

now what you may see happen is a new sled on the ac chassis but with a different name and same engine or newer updated version of the phazer engine. this would be similar to what they did between 2005 and 2007 with the apex and attak and the rx1, vector and rage before the new chassis in 2008. apex and attak were basically the same sleds, and the rx1, vector and rage were all basically the same sleds just the rx1 had the bigger engine.

Speaking of the R1 engine, what about the new FZ-09 and FZ-07 engines. They were obviously successful using a version of the R1 engine in the Apex, Yamaha is an engine company that has the ability to do this again with those engines. The FZ-07 was released in June right, giving it plenty of street time. Maybe that is the next Phazer engine.
689cc, EFI, twin cylinder, with 50ft/lb torque. although rated at 74hp tuned for the street.
58mpg in a bike. Most would be happy if it got half that mpg in a sled. Which would be a good guess actually.

Both of those bike engines are tuned for the street and weight of that bike. Who knows what they could do in an entry-level sled.

I'm just already shopping for my next used sled in 4 years. I can't imagine spending retail on a new sled either.
Similar thing happened this week in the Yamaha Boat world. The 2015's were released, and all of a sudden the last 4 years of their flagship 242LS just took a nosedive in price and many are hitting the market used. That's good news for me, as I could never justify the price of a 24' Yamaha boat on the showfloor. But a nice 4 year old for half price is more my speed!!

Not according to Chris of Yamaha Canada. He says more true-blue yamaha models are coming. And the viper just isn't up to the standards that Apex owners have come to expect in fit, finish, and overall quality. It doesn't make it a bad sled, it's just not a flagship.

IMO, I'm not convinced the 4-banger is departing the Yamaha sled lineup. Even if I'm wrong and the new Apex (or its replacement) is a boosted triple, it will be nothing less than awesome!! We'll know for sure in the near future.

R1 cross plane engine 170/180hp,Full Stainless exhaust, ""TEN GALLON GAS TANK"", Fully clipped track, A taller seat to put my hips above my knees, High beams that aren't shining in the treetops and hand warmers that actualy warm my hands. You can try to make it lighter but ""DO NOT"" sacrifice durability, weight is not a big factor to me, 99% trail rider. What I do not want is Titanium exhaust and power steering, It works fine on my Grizzly but I doubt I need it on a sled. Exactly. After seeing the 2014 Vipers come, then a second year of Vipers in 2015 with no new Apex, that was my indication last spring to just get another Apex, till they actually decide to replace the Apex.
I'm guessing that Arctic Cat had a lot of influence on the decision to offer a flatland turbo. But now that they have, just imagine them offering it for an Apex equivalent sled. This is not to downplay all the third parties that have offered turbo all these years to the Apex owners. There are way more of us owners that would dip our toes into the Turbo world, if it was 1. offered and supported by Yamaha 2. would not void warranty 3. could be financed, or purchased at a lower cost incentive with a spring order 4. would be a reliable pump gas option that we would not have to tinker with, but still get a moderate performance boost.
I don't think I'm too far off the mark when I say there are a great deal of Apex owners that think it would be cool, but those few points will keep me away from one. Like others that have posted above, most of us are not disappointed with the engine performance, so I understand why it has not happened up until now. There is just that little devil on your shoulder saying, BTW, that cat has more HP than you. GRRR
