I spent a crap load of time on maintenance last week gettting ready for a 7 day trip next week, took her for a ride today for about 200 miles, and figured I would introduce a newbie to the sport. Unfortunately the sport is not for him, but along the way, I found myself waiting for him quite often and stopping to make sure he would not mistaken local trails (ungroomed, but with sled tracks) for the actual trail he should be on. So on one particular stop, I overshot and need to back-up, no place to turn around. I backed up in reverse maybe 50-70 feet and when I stopped, I noticed that my slider ripped off therail bumber and was now wedged uo against the shaft !!! I have not had time to see if the screw holding the slide secure was ripped off or fell off, or whatthe hell happenned, was just curious if happenned to anyone else and what I can do to prevent this.

Sounds like the screw that holds the hyfax in came out or broke. Were you riding on a road or low snow? Maybe if that were the case the hyfax melted to the track and stuck to it in reverse. That's the only idea I have.

Plenty of snow, exellent conditions actually. I am thinking the screw came out because from what I can see, the rail does not seem damaged.
I just hope I didn't cause damage to driveshaft.

Well, in the shop this morning, I thawed her out and noticed the screw broke at the head ! My guess is that the slides got too hot and stuck to the clips and I went in reverse, causing this to snap the bolt and bumper.
This make sense ???
I do tend to run the track snug
, could this be the cause, or I stopped still too fast without giving the slides a chance to cool off. Should I run the track looser?

WOW..it broke at the head?..and its a countersunk type screw too!....very ODD!....maybe just a defect in screw from the get-go and changing them week- ened the screw more...weird.
I run my track rather on the loose side myself....,i like it to hang some when in the air...and also i run two wheel kits,so mine never stick.

Just below the head. nice clean brake too. I don't see how removing and replacing would "weaken" the head, but it certainly did not loosen out of the threads, which was my main concern and reason for posting what I found out this morning.
Let me snap a few....back in 2 minutes

Yeah, I always loctite the hyfax screws. I usually use blue loctite, even though in theory it should be permanent. I've never had trouble removing the screws, but I use the right size screwdriver bit and a small, 1/4" socket wrench.
I have seen them come out before - twice on the Yamaha Apex. I've never had one come out when loctited in place.

with the apex sleds the first tool you always need is a #3 philips head socket....used for all the black panel screws and invaluable for the sliders for sure!....
i have never loctited mine to date....but probably will next time!

rail screws?
had this happen and caught it before it caused any damage. i was able to remove the screw. i at this point cut out a small square slot above the slider and now use a screw with a bolt above it like a polaris. no more worries of this happining again.

If you over tighten the screw you will weaken it. I did it to mine and was lucky enough to have it brake on me while in the shop.
The correct torque on the little screws is important. So is the right sized driver. TRy and find a POSIDRIVE philips. The profile is different from a regular philips. They are a little stubbier.

Happened last year on Lake Gogebic in MI for me. Was running down the lake an noticed a clicking noise. Got off - looked around and couldnt see anything. Continued onto get some gogo and found that my hyfax was wrapped up around the rear of the track.
The screw busted right where it enters the rail. Trailered it home. Removed the skid and had to use an easy out to get it out.
Replaced the screw and have not had any issues since.
No idea why or how it happened.
