I've been dealing with this Yamaha problem for 20 years! When I buy a Yamaha I immediately buy the extra components required. Usuallly under $200.00 to solve this problem. I can post photo's and describe solution or pm you if anyone requires.
The track has to be fully clipped.

um..
def not a believer in more clips...more metal equals more wear.
I replaced 4 outside idlers with bigger kimpex units...5.25" ran in VERY marginal conditions, lots of ice/bare road. 300 miles on my sled...clips have barely any scratches, and wear looks very marginal if at all.
not very worried about the issue anymore.

Spend $200.00 or less and no worries about hyfax wear! Ice scratchers and idlers will solve all wear problems if properly applied!

Just installed sliders after 2450 miles. I do not have ice scratchers nor did replace idlers. But, that is the least of my problems with this sled.

Re: um..
Actually, your wrong. more clips mean more surface area to slide on and usually wear. Same with double carbides. More surface area and less pressure on the carbide tip equals a lot longer life.
I am installing 135mm wheels on my XTX. How do you put the front wheels on? The 6205 bearings are wider. Do I machine the aluminum end parts or is there an easier fix?

fully clipped on my xtx and no wear. with a 2" i still hit 90+ quickly. added some weight but reduced friction.

Re: um..
The thinking is, the rubber track where it isn't clipped, causes more friction, wearing out the Hyfax.

The key is snow, good snow conditions are the key. Plus I think people get a little nervous after the innitial wear and may be changing them prematurely.

4,000 miles on the original hy-fax on my 09 with NO upgrades at all. You must be riding in some really bad conditions

Ok guys, we all have a love/hate relationship with ours Nytros. I love the engine and ergos of my 08 fx w/136 kit. But lets face it, for all the positives that come with riding a Yamaha , this hyfax wear problem is starting to wear thin LOL. If I can't find a solution soon,I might become an ex-Yamaha rider. Winter is much too short (especially this year). I'm almost 50 and owned many different sleds and raced cross- country in my younger days, I've never had issues w/hyfax and poor handling as I've had with this sled. Sorry just venting!

I added 2 sets of idlers on mine. Put one set near the front and second set on the inside near mid track were the back rubber stops are. It wore quite a bit for the first 600 miles but since it has seemed to stabilize and doesnt seem to be wearing at all now...

After the first tirp of 535 miles hyfax were worn to 16.5mm at the thinest point (center of rails) the manual says min. thickness is 10.5mm . After second trip ,700 more miles (1227 total) I decided to change them. They still measure 13.94mm . My track had loosened up a bit and my new hyfax are yam. HPs
13.94mm - pretty exact with the measurements there (LOL). But why did you change them before they were even close to the wear line - 3.44mm more to go?
I think people are finding they wear to a certain point and then stop because that is the point at which the small Yammie wheels finally start to do their job - too bad they just don't fix this problem with larger wheels, or whatever it takes. I can't complain with the use I got out of mine on the stock VL suspension - 7500Km and I changed them this year with about 2mm left to go.

something burning
Had 50KM on new 2010 xtx, i let my brother try the new sled and i could smell like rubber burning, i couldn't tell if it was his sled i was riding or my xtx he was riding so i pulled him over and we found it was the hyfax melting on the clips and getting tossed onto the muffler and stinking i couldn't believe it!!!
i have to get the wheel kit, this is not good
what wheel kit or kits are available? Are these aftermarket or just get the Yami marginal snow kit, is this enough????
