Apex clutch on Sidewinder

In other words, I should have purchased an older Apex Clutch from 2010-2006?

The clutch you have is just as strong as the 2006-2010 clutch. Besides the little set screws for the roller pins removed, there is no other difference in the clutch or how it performs.

The only thing I would do is add our anti-movement washers to the roller pin bolts. This will keep the roller pin and bolts from moving, wearing and making noise.

I have a few Apex used clutches and one brand new one on the shelf that I purchased a few years back. I was disappointed to discover the new one did not have the set screws as well, but otherwise the clutches appear to be the same...but maybe the new ones are made in China...who knows.

I don't see these on your website yet.

Our web guy is on vacation for gun hunting and these we just introduced 2-3 weeks ago.

Call us and we can get these out to you.

The part # is TSK-545 and is not on the website yet. They are $5.00 US for a pack of 3.

Thanks for info and will be purchasing these and other items from you.

A person could drill and tap the spider if needing the set screws. Looks like the best way to do it is to disassemble the primary.
This can be done on the sidewinder clutch or the nytro/ apex/vector clutch.

Item # 15 set screw which is no longer used in the clutches from Yamaha. This photo is from a 2009 APEX

Does it mean it is not a true Apex clutch? No, the newer APEX clutches did not have these set screws either. These set screws were in the older models up to 2010, which still had them. Yamaha removed the set screws in 2011 and up.
What would be there reasoning for removing the set screw? Any idea?

True, I've done that, but only felt one hole was necessary. I remember seeing a prostock Vmax4 of Iantomassi with the hood open at a race which only used the set screws to hold the weights and rollers in place - no bolts at all!

Are the pins and bolts what is actually making most or all of the rattling noise ?

Securing the pins and roller bolts help quiet the rattle a little bit but not a lot. The engine harmonics on these three cylinders also rattle the weights and rollers so unless you install a Hurricane noise reduction stub shaft or a different clutch you will always have a fair amount of noise.
Just the nature of the beast

Engine harmonics, clutch weight relative to crank weight. Etc.
Cat Team primaries don't have any rattle at all. Quiet. To offset this advantage though, they're made so they CRACK. LOL. Wonder what the weight difference is between Sidewinder clutch and Team clutch? Does Hurricane stub fix get Winder primary up to weight of Team? Anyone weighed these 2 clutches side by side?

Pictures are worth a 1000 words

Apex clutch 8 lbs 7 oz

Sidewinder Clutch 9lbs 10 oz minus 9 oz for weights so 9lbs 1 oz

c 2.JPG

Team Cat Clutch 10 lbs 14 oz

So the Team clutch is almost 2.5 lb heavier then the Apex clutch and 1.75 lb heavier then the Winder clutches

The Hurricane noise reduction stub shaft is much heavier then the stock stub shaft by approx 2 lbs
