Apex Exhaust Gutting w/ Pics

Same reason that naturally aspirated drag cars go faster with tuned mufflers installed compared to just open exhausts. (excludes blown engines)
Pro-Stock drag bikes, same thing.
All naturally aspirated engines produce more power thru tuning the exhaust backpressure / pressure pulses.

great pics and feed back. thanks
was looking at doing the same, instead of spending alot on aftermarket exhaust.
i am installing a super charger and want the exhaust less restrictive, do you think this might have freed up the exhaust aswell as made it sound better?

Not sure what the metal is but I don't think it's anything special. My only concern initially was that it was galvanized or aluminized but it wasn't, or at least it didn't weld like it was. I welded it with normal 0.023" mig wire with Stargold C25 mix gas (25% CO2 75% argon) which is standard MIG gas for carbon steel welding. In the off chance that it had some sort of corrosion resistant coating, I did spray the top side of the muffler with some left over VHT paint that I used on my Viper pipes.

It's made of stainless steel, my guess would be 409 as it does seem to stain to a degree. Welding it with carbon steel wire will work but you will likely see rust form shortly after. I did Tig welded mine with stainless, smoothed everthing out, can't tell that anything has been done with it installed. It's for sale if anyone is interested?

I guess I never thought of it while I had it apart but a quick magnet check would confirm if it is stainless or not - most SS is not magnetic. I'm assuming LJ 452 is correct that it's some sort of stainless - at least on the outside. There's an inside layer as well that might be carbon steel. Either way, if you have Argon and SS wire or a TIG welder then I'd certainly suggest using SS rather than carbon steel in light of this information. I checked mine the end of last year and the VHT high temp paint was keeping everything from corroding but his recommendation would be the best approach.

Yup, with the 409 you will have some magnetic properties, I think even the 304 has some magnetic properties to it, it been too long since metalurgy so I could be wrong. As I said my guess is 409 only because of the staining (brown color) and cost. Although the brown tint could just be a result of the eviroment sleds run in. With the top being fairly protected the high temp paint may work fine as you won't get the sand blasting effect on the top of the muffler. It is definently not aluminized though.

It really isn't much, if at all louder. I think it's just a different tone. While it's not the quietest out there, it compareable to stock and definently not the "LOOK AT ME I'M COOL" sound as half the other two strokes with can I encounter. Point is you will not be the reason for closed trails with this settup. Just for the record, I'm not a fan of loud exhausts either.

VAST SHEEP :ot:

Not really off topic, loud exhausts are a large problem. That being said slightly louder, different tone exhausts are not really offending to most people i've talked to. We ride through check points a few time a season and have never been questioned, but ask a guy on a loud can 2 stroke, he gets hassled far more frequently. It's all a matter of personal preference, the land owners I have talked to don't seem to mind louder snowmobiles, but all of them hate the loud can idiot who comes through cracking the throttle every two seconds. My feeling is you know when it is to loud, don't be stupid. Ride with respect for everyone around you, because you represent me.
