Apex Exhaust Gutting w/ Pics

Great post guys, but I wanted to sum things up, seems like some are saying there are 2 outter layers in the shell on the new mufflers, i can only see one from the pic, should I cut through both the same time or do like one guy said, cut outside first, then cut the inside one about an inch in from that. Then I want to know what parts you are removing when you say 'gutting' some are cutting the two tubes, others the cone, maybe some all? I was just curious on options, I hate drone noise from vehicles and wondered the best way to mod the muffler and keep the drone down....... Thanks in advance..
 

My original how-to post probably failed to mention the double layers, but, yes there are two layers of metal. My sled is a 2006 so my guess is that all '06 and newer sleds at least have the double layer construction. I cut them both in the same cut and then cranked my amperage up enough to get full penetration and weld through both when I put it back together. Could also cut the outer and then offset by an inch or so as someone else mentioned. It really doesn't matter as long as it's sealed up. I did check mine for corrosion and it's holding up well with VHT high temp paint over the welds (used carbon steel wire).
 
I was thinking about doing this to my sled also. My cousin gutted his on his 06 Attak and it sounds awesome.

My question is did you encounter any stumbling issues off idle. My cousin gutted his exhaust and he had a stumbling problem when you first whack the throttle. He tried to compensate by adjusting the CO values but didn't seem to do much.
 
check back to page 1, I believe someone has done this. If you're altready in there I would assume that you would just go ahead and cut out the tubes rather than drill holes. what is the drop in weight advantage??? I'm seriously looking into doing this asap. I have a friend who welds already lined up.
 
My filter kit on the intake over drones the exhaust noise from a gutted can. I have been through check points in the UP, and they all notice the intake noise and never mention the exhaust. Maxdlx
 
i just gutted my 04 rx1 today. someone asked the question on how much does it lighten it up. i weighed what i took out and it isnt even 1 lb. it sounds pretty good but i havent been able to try it in the field yet. ive noticed right away that it makes it run rich. so i think that a k an n air filter set up is a must. and maybe some jets. my sled has 19000 kms on it so its time for some fine tuneing i think. :exc: almost there lol
 
A buddy of mine and I just bought a pair of Attack GT's and have not yet been able to ride them due to no snow in Maine :o| I was thinking of trying this exhaust mod seeing how we have nothing else to do this weekend. Those that have done this, what are the good and bads? If you had it to do over again, would you? If money were not an issue, would you have bought an after market exhaust?
 
I love the sound of mine, but I drilled a few more holes then the pics showed, I still get some drone noise but that was there before I done the mod also. im sure you will love it.
 
did my 40th a month ago... 260 miles on so far this year with gutted exhaust.... i cut all the cross over pipies and well as the inlet cone!.. All the pipes... the sound is amazing!!!!, i have no stumble off idle and performance is the same... i jump off my rtx and onto the 40th... other than suspensions the motors feel the same with respect to throttle responce/performance. other than sound... no difference... but it sure does turn heads now and have been asked what exhaust i bought!... if i had the $$$ i'd spend on aftermarket but this was a "budget" mod!
