Actually found the chain case much more easierWasn't this a sticky before? If not, I nominate for sticky! Don't forget the swearing and beer drinking that happens when you round out the crankcase drain plug! I hate that thing!

I have never seen this in my 8 yrs of serving my Apex's, there is a sleeve on the clamp so You can only tighten it so tight.Mr. Sled, if I may add? Be careful not to over torque the "clamps that hold the air box to the throttle bodies" This will twist and distort the clamps maybe even pinching the boot off the throttle bodies in the process. My SE came with 3 of the 4 clamps twisted due to a poor set-up from my dealer. Good thing I checked! Doesn't hurt to apply some lube to the boots or throttle bodies, make sure all is well seated before tightening. Thanks for taking the time, your How Too's are always very much appreciated!

It's in the connection on the bottom of the oil tank. Remove the hose before removing the fitting on the tank so as not to bend the screen.

The screen is at the bottom of the oil tank, go back an look at the pic of the oil tank, to the right of the drain bolt there is a 90 degree fitting with an oil line attached, remove oil line an then the 2 bolts, pull it out, the filter is attached to it,, Just a wire mesh screen.

Took about 3 hours the first time. About an hour including drain and cleaning time now that I have experience.how long does the oil change take on average, should the filter be changed every year also, have heard no need to c hange filter
How much oil does everyone get after draining. The book says 3.17 quarts with filter change. I did my first oil change too, and I put in three quarts to start like it says. Ran it for a few minutes then topped off. Bu I put in like 12 more ounces and I still have room to get it to the H mark if I wanted to go that high. .17 Quarts is equivalent to 5 ounces. Not a big difference, just makes me feel like I may have slightly overfilled it.

You really can't to overfill it if you're under the top line on the dipstick. I would say an oil change with filter is more like 3.7 quarts

I have to add, make sure when you take the plug out of the bottom that you are using a Metric Allen Key. Use of a Standard SAE Allen Key will strip the plug. I use a Allen key that is for a 3/8 socket wrench. I have two sets of these sockets one for metric and one for SAE. I also have the long and short Allen wrench sets. You can't have to many tools and it gives the wife and kids things to buy for you on birthdays and at Christmas.
I tap (key word tap) the 3/8th inch socket Allen key in the Allen head plug with a hammer to ensure its all the way in and it stays there while I put the ratchet on it. Tapping also helps to loosen them by vibrating the bond between the threads. Yamaha is metric it needs metric tools. People hate Allen heads but I like them.
Its the same as the Phillips #3 screws, right tool for the right job or run the risk of stripping it. I tap these as well to ensure fitment. I wish that instead of Phillip screws they had used Allen Heads because they are way harder to strip but I know many will disagree.
And... I have to add MY RECOMMENDATION:
When you remove the "Allen Head Bolt" from the underside of the engine to drain the oil, wipe it off and put it in your pocket.
Next, drive to your local hardware store and buy a "Hex Head" Bolt with the exact same threads and length.
Then, drive back home and install the new bolt (don't forget the washer) with the correct mm socket/socket torque wrench.
Put the original bolt in the toolbox (where mine has been for 8 years).
I made this swap about 18,000 miles ago with NO problems. I could not stand the thought of stripping that bolt and then--trying the get the darn thing out- what a PITA that would be. A heck of a lot easier to change oil without the worry of striping the allen head and without having to buy more tools.
