neon Phil bought his Warrior in 04. He put an MCexpress turbo on it and took it out and raced it. In 1500 miles of racing and trail riding he never used one drop of oil.
He put in Low compression pistons and heavy duty rods last summer. We he inspected his motor when it was apart it was flawless. After everything was back together he started running 20 plus pounds of boost. with a complete season and now half a season gone this year he hasn't burned one drop of oil
All he's ever down for brake in was take it out and ride it.

I work at a diesel engine plant. Probably not apples to apples, but our hot test after assembly is:
1 1/2 minutes at idle
1 minute at high idle
Full load.

We are pondering the thought of running it down the track to break it in as well

Hi guys, that's is comparing 03 and 04's to 05's as well. The cylinder plating and rings seem alot better in the 05 motors.
But yes, you need cylinder pressure to help break in a motor and cylinder pressure requires load.
Breaking in an engine is always a compromise, there are basically two things that need to break in, the cams and rings/cylinders.
The cams should be broke in at 2000-2500 RPM for 15-20 minutes but the rings should be loaded ASAP. Now with a new motor the castings and pistons should be heat cycled 10-15 times.
Like I said, it's a compromise. We run a new engine at 2500RPM until it hit 150* and let cool (unassisted) to 80-100* 3 to 4 cycles of this. Then heat to 160* 4-6 times with varied RPM, then a few more to 170* then on the Dyno 3 1/4 throttle runs (approx 10 sec each) 3000-8000, 3 1/2 throttle, 3 3/4 throttle runs and then 3 full power and RPM runs.
Thanks,
Ray
As long as the engine is at the proper operating temp when you hit it. WOnt hurt it at all. I have always done it that way too. I think you have to put full load on the rings to break in properly.

It's not just the pistons and rings that need to break in,it's valves/valve guides, valveseals, valve "seats",camchain, cams, shims, buckets, crank, crank bearings, etc.
