So the other day I backed my sled into the trailer and shut it down all was well until the next morning . I started the sled up after sitting all night and it turned over slowly and was idling really low at 1000 rpms. I shut it down and pulled the belt , it burnt up backing into the trailer I guess ?
Anyway new belt on and idle corrected itself around 18-1900 until warmed up and then 1450-1500. Broke the belt in and all was good but after 50 miles when I come to a stop and I'm idling the sled has a light belt squeal . All stock no aftermarket belt adjuster . I'm used to the old Yamaha clutches with the three bolts on the back and shims to adjust the tightness ...what's the easiest way to adjust these new clutches ? New Belt is very tight and sits low in the secondary .

Sled seems to be working great just don't want to listen to the squeal every time I come to a crossing or stop to talk to a buddy.

It was a dumb idea , lesson learnt. I didn't have trailer guides finished up and front of trailer was full so attempted to sneak it in backwards . Yeah it's low and tight . No owners manual that's why I asked about setting belt deflection @DMCTurbo

If I was home I'd snap a pic of the page for ya. You add or remove thin washers behind the secondary mounting bolt. If I remember correctly they are behind the large washer. I've installed a TP adjuster so my memory is vague of it.It was a dumb idea , lesson learnt. This one is done with the bolt holding secondary on. Shims under big washer. More shims the looser the belt I believe.It was a dumb idea , lesson learnt. They might have some of those shims in toolkit or they should since belts all vary in size. Odd it was that tight with just a belt change. I would look over that secondary. If rollers go could cause this also but doubtful all 3 would go at once. Just never know.


Oh and knowing the 8JP if you smoked it in reverse there might also be alot of black rubber on clutches. Remove belt and clean clutches with Acetone.

I agree with what has been posted here but how can the belt be tight and be sitting low in the secondary? Unless its the wrong belt or a belt way out of spec.

You are correct , what a mess that 8JP makes ...didn't even blow the belt just cooked it backing into the trailer . Didn't even bother to look at clutches figured there would be no issues . The belt is sitting flush with the secondary and has proper slack with no more belt squeal .

After only a few blasts on my basically mile-less sled,(bone stock still) that 8jp has left lots and lots of black belt dust all over, never seen so much belt dust in such little riding. That belt will be something i DONT run.
Ultimax hanging on shelf likely will be my norm.....and I think I have three new 8jps here...grrrr

Easiest way is too remove shims behind the large washer that stops the helix. That's what sets deflection. The helix attaches to the posts on the rear sheave and the large washer the helix makes contact with dictates the distance the inner and outer sheaves have from each other and belt thickness will also play a part. As the belt wears, you can play with shimming to maintain desired deflection. If you add shims, it puts the washer further out from the helix and it makes the inner sheave move inward farther to bottom out narrowing the sheave distance and pushing the belt upward making the deflection tighter and the opposite happens when you remove shims. I noticed the 8JP rides a little low when proper deflection is achieved and the 8DN rides just over the top since the belt is about 11mm longer than the 8JP. I usually run mine as tight as I can without a constant squeal. If I hear an occasional chirp, that means its right on the ragged edge of being too tight. Hope this helps

Your explanation makes it very easy to understand the new method to change belt deflection on the SideWinder compared to the way most of use were used to with the older style secondary with the three bolts on the stationary sheave that required adding or subtracting shims to adjust the belt deflection.
Now you just need to explain to the masses just how this new SW secondary actually "floats" compared to the older style secondary.
