Blowing belts

IMO:
Sidewinder stub shafts should be removed and checked to ensure the bearing is fully seated on the shafts before bothering to check and set clutch alignment.

Depends on your setups...but there's nothing wrong with the Gates belts. I, along with many others run the Gates belt and put many many miles, full seasons of asphalt racing, along with some off trail.

Offset is majorly important and will kill any belt if not set correctly.

I have a 17 Ltd le, sled has 10,000 miles. I ran stock up to this year and would only get 800 to 1000 miles before blowing a belt. Sled was slow compared to any other winder I raced. Once I put the juice to her this year I was going through a belt every 300 miles! I just bought the Hurricane alignment tool. I was out 2.5mm, I had to machine 4.5mm off the secondary. Belt and clutches went from smoking hot to luke warm! I only have 50 miles on so far but could not be happier with the results. Wish I would have checked this sooner for sure.

Why did you machine 4.5 MM off if you were only off 2.5 MM? Anything more than 2.5-3 mm machined and the movable will travel off the end on the shaft!!!

Now your movable will hit the washers behind the clutch and limit your belt travel and top speed in OD. Make sure your shim washers behind the secondary are smaller than the post on the secondary so this can't happen now. Grind them down or get smaller shims so this does not happen and blow belts or rob your top end.

I mis-spoke and re-measured today, I was 3.5mm off on alignment. You are right though I probably should have only taken off the 3.5 needed and did not realize it would limit the movement. I must have missed that when reading all the posts on here. I will have a bushing made the right diameter to shim the back properly at the same diameter as the clutch shaft so I don't have an issue. Thank you so much KnappAttack for the heads up! Love this site
