BROKEN PRIMARY SPRINGS. Keep eye on.

Yes there is something about the harmonics of this engine that might be a issue as well causing the spring to fail prematurely.
Also our customers that now have on around 3000 mi the Bolts that hold the rollers on have wore heavily into the spyder from vibration and I have not seen this before even on high mileage Vectors, Nytro's, and other triples.
I think some of the vibrations are coming from the crank shaft spline. Mine is what i would call very loose and has a lot of play. Others that i have looked at are also loose. That is not helping the primary and is also making it very noisy, more so than the Viper or Nytro.

I took a look at mine and my Dad's primary today and both are showing worn spring coils on the outside edge. Not real bad yet but we only have like 600 miles on. It looks to me like the spring is rubbing on the pocket. I don't see any worn paint between coils like it was binding. Only paint missing is on the outside of the coils. Also as I said in another post the primary roller bolts move about 1mm and rattle like crazy at idle.

The sad part is it took CAT 5 years to figure out the clutching on the 800's.. Think about that for a second >five years!.. I came over to Yami for better clutching and then CAT gets it figured out.. AND Yami has the exact same issues CAT had in 2012 with Cat clutching (not team then).. I almost cant believe how similar the issue are and were.. Both springs binding/paint rubs, rollers, no top end, etc.. I really feel the CATS are better looking and its now even on clutching.. SO ?? Now the real question is does Yamaha fix the issues from the 17' clutching on the winders..
A lot of our clutch belt issues on 2012 and 2013 turbos were engine misalignment from that POS TCL set up we fought with, every one who bought EVO,s delete had zero issues after, hell I even hooked up a 1100 cfm fan on left hand side panel, and had more holes drilled in that POS than swiss does cheese, and still blew belts at 300-400 miles and my heat gun had many at 300 degrees, that is smoking, also had a lot of Franks parts on my sled, sense I was up there helping him make clutch guards, biggest disappointing sled I have ever had and hope I never have one like it again. Guys install glide washers and a shorter primary spring and a lot of the friction problems may go away,i hope. When I first saw this long #*$&@ primary, first thing I thought about was some of my heelclicker springs, they are just to long to work good on a yammie stock cover, the 911 may also help some, but this vibration thing, and worn pins on the spider, thats a new one. Wonder if it has to do with the new HP and these new primary clutches?

I am noticing the exact same on mine. paint missing from the side of the coil. does the pocket need to be machined slightly wider maybe?

A spring vibrating will have the most movement halfway up the spring. Making the spring pockets wider will therefore help less for rubbing than making the spring pocket walls shorter. I wonder if anyone has ever tried a Dual Spring? In valve springs that inner spring rubbing the main outer is specifically designed to stop these sort of issues.

Run the thunder products kit with the glide washers. I have 1200 miles on the thunder products clutching with zero paint off the spring, no rubbing. Not to mention the thunder products setup pulls a hell of a lot harder than the stock weights.

I am struggling with how those 2 glide washers will keep paint from rubbing off the side of the spring. can someone explain?

Thanks Cannondale. Yes, don't automatically expect there will be no paint missing or coil rubbing with the Thunder Products kit. No doubt it is a good kit, but mine is proof that it still may occur.

Ok shame. I heard good things about the cat clutches. I guess for some might be better to purchase a cat, only differences are clutches and skis. Little different gearing too.

Yup...took tuner skis, put in garbage and replaced with cat procross skis. Blew another belt tonight 284 miles and put hole in bellypan, might as well throw clutches in trash too and put cat team clutches. Front spring, no paint cause doesnt fit on spring pocket, rear spring no paint due to coil bind, and rollers that dont turn. Wake up YAMAHA!!!! Still no parts available for 17s yet 2018s are released.......Anyone that buys a winder over a zr is foolish!!!! Save your money and get a cat.

The primary spring has been doing this gouging in primary's all the way back as far as I have been doing clutches.....so it's nothing new. And it does it on all brands. Glide washers will eliminate most of the wear on the clutch spring pockets.

Paint missing is nothing new either....but if the spring is missing paint all the way around a coil, then I would be really concerned about the spring sticking in the pocket.

Nos did they make that spring pocket deeper or smaller on this clutch? What are the dimensions vs the old clutch? I have springs here with over 6000mi on them that don't have wear at all as far up as Snow addicts. If its a resonance that's at play hopefully its only at a certain rpm if that's the case then above or below that for clutching is going to make a big difference. May have to clutch for power and a resonance.

The clutch has the same dimensions....but the shoulders that surround the spring are taller from what I can see.

Well there is one cause. One thing I would do if I saw that is remove all the paint and get in those pockets and polish the inside. Its pretty obvious from that picture that that spring is going to hit might as well make it slide rather than having to wear the paint off and stick.

Just inspected my clutching AGAIN before heading north today.. My primary spring with 1500 miles on it has ONE SMALL rub maybe 3/4 inch long, half way up spring.. But its old.. In that I mean it probably happened the first 100 miles and has not since.. otherwise its clean.. I will stick with it
