There have been several diferrent posts about RX's using oil. I thought I would try to get everyones input on one thread.

So far I have not found a common setup that seems to be worse than another. First, people blamed Amsoil, but people using Yamalube are using oil. Then the turbo owners thought it was their turbos causing the problem, but there are plenty of non-turboed sleds using oil. The latest I have noticed is people debating break-in procedures, but it looks to me like there are some from both sides that are burning oil.

Anybody have anymore ideas or input? It would be nice to have a list of everyone that is having problems. It seems that if we contact Yamaha as individuals we get their famous song and dance about how NO ONE has ever complained about this before. Maybe if we approach them as a group???????????

When I was stock without the Turbo I never used (burned) any oil. I rode all last year and never had to put any in. My Mom and Dad, Brother in Law, Friend Kelly T. and friend Rob T. all have 2003 RX-1 Mts. and they had no problem at all. That is 6 (six) RX-1's with no problems, I can't explain this but I did not know there was a problem untill I put my Turbo on.
I started burning oil when I put my Turbo on and I believe that problem is solved now. I went on 2 rides, about 150 miles and did not burn any oil. The oil did look a little runny like it heated up and broke down. I am sure the fix with the Turbo was I had a small air leak that became large when I broke the glue loose on the plastic Tees on the front of the carbs and I installed the oil line update to restrict the oil pressure for the Bender Turbo. Before I did this I burned 1/2 quart on every ride.

I think it has more to do with sustained high rpm's and miles. My initial thought was it builds up preasure in the crank case and the oil is drawn into the airbox. I have 8,915 miles on the 04 and it uses approx.1qt. per 1000 miles, the only noticable difference between the 03 i had and the 04 regarding this topic is when they started using oil. the 03 about 3000 miles the 04 about 5500 miles

I understand the sustained high speed, high rpm arguement, but have found that it does not seem to be the case. While I do alot of that type of riding, I also have done some 30 to 50 mph riding with the same amount of oil loss. Prior to the turbo I went through one quart in about 1100 miles. Now, it is a quart in less than 300 miles. The differences are, the turbo and the breather is vented under the hood rather than to an airbox. I have no restriction in the oil line to the turbo and it returns to the head. perhaps the pressure is too much and some is getting by the valve seals? I am waiting for an update to return the oil to the return line to the sump. Where does the Bender return line go? I wonder if installing the oil breather line into the intake filter would make any difference. Now, I realize none of this explains why a stock sled would be using so much oil.

Spray!!

We started the temperature cycling of Misfit's sled yesterday. We will run it from stone cold to the safety shut down 6 times. We have four cycles complete and will finish this phase today.

Before we started the cycling we changed the oil to Penszoil 5 - 20. I feel the Yamaha oil maybe to good a lubricant for break in.

Next we will do wide open runs and then let cool completely. This is what I did with mine and they are both extremely strong. The only differance is I did mine on a hay field.

I will post the results.

I have an 03 shorty with 3500 kms on and I have now had to add 2 liters so far.
I broke mine in by the book, the only under the hood mod is green springs in the carbs ( and fuel shut offs)

I forgot to say that i broke my rx-1m in hard and now i've got 10765kms.So far i Went thru 2 jackshaft bearings , 2 collars ,1 drive axle bearing 2 light bulbs,4 fuses,1 set of carbides,1 handwarmer,1 half of secondary,1 helix,4 belts, broke center shock in half, about 8-10 liters of oil and 1 track.Rolled sled over 3 times.tell me i don't drive hard but the is i can't seem to kill this thing

HEY GUYS-
Just a bit of info to put the oil use into perspective-
if you ran your rx-1 engine at 6000 rpms for 1 mile
and each time a cylinder fired it used 1 drop of oil,do you know it would go through 6.3 qts in a mile?

My sled burns about half as much with 10-30 mobil 1, compared to 0-40 amsoil . Ams was 1 quart for 400 miles. Figure that one out?

2000 miles scince ams oil on my warriors and they use no noticible amount of oil.

I will be changeing it again this weekend and will pour it back in the quarts and get a oil test do ne to see what it looks like and how it's holding out.

I think ams-oil is a better oil for the sleds becuse i got better fule milage right away and bolth my warriors get better milage with ams-oil that my rx-1 did last year That rx-1 used 1 quart per 2000 miles with 4000miles on it.
