Chain case Bearings

I think I had the chaincase jackshaft bearing go today. a 2014 with 8000 kms. Is it common for these to fail. sled is still under warranty , going to dealer on Monday. At least made it back to truck
Let me know if they cover it under warranty

BTbt
They have to replace the bearing anyway so $0 dollars there to go to 2016 bearing, worst case your shaft is still good so you pay for 2016 shaft, best case the shaft is damaged and has to be replaced, should cost you $0 to upgrade.

I think mine took a crap this weekend also.....

Made it back to camp, but very bad vibration at 40mph and some high pitch metal noises from the chaincase.

just under 5,000 miles
I have some spare new parts here including case. Just let me know. I will order the 16 shaft also at TA. My time is probably coming too.

So at the upper end of the chaincase we have a bushing that wears even though it does nothing spins inside and we have a bearing that is prone to fail prematurely. Sounds like a lube or lube delivery issue to me.

Yep mine went at 2300 miles. They covered everything. I think yamaha better recall these and get a fix done.

Sounds like China in bearing case and maybe lube issue top gear bushing.

That's why I put a little Lucas in mine. Figured it couldn't hurt. This is a long chain case so I suspect oil doesn't get up top like some other applications. The good news is the whole inner case, bearings, collar and all is pretty cheap, about $160. I almost bought a spare to put on the shelf.

I highly doubt a recall will be made or is even in order.

During my first service i noticed that the second the clutch engaged the sight glass would go empty. all the lube was being carried by the chains. I added oil 2oz at a time untill at slow speed some oil remained in the bottom of the case. worked out to 16oz. when my bearing failed both cages in the upper bearing failed the inside one was found in the case and the other went through the seal I only noticed the failure because enough oil came out to get on the exhaust it never made a sound. Ive been a mechanic for 30 years and am pretty in tune with noises and vibrations and never noticed anything. the outer race was pitted I believe its just a crappy bearing i replaced with a high quality skf bearing and still overfill the case. all good so far.

Yes I overfill mine also. Right to top of window and a bit more for good measure. Dont forget to make sure the check ball in chaincase vent isnt stuck out also. Mine was. easily seen and gunk gets into the vent from open hole in tunnel. I used a hose and sucked and blowed to make sure that checkball was working. Made her happy I think!

I had mine apart to change the bearing last fall and the bearing had more than enough lube in it, and that was after spending the spring, summer and most of the fall in storage.
The bearing on the other hand is a POS, the separator looks like it is hand made with a file, and the inner race was pitted at 1800 Klm.
Remember back in the day when we used air tools (before cordless), one drop of oil that was mostly carried out with the first use, those bearings spin like a bat outa hell with very little lubrication and last a long time.

I will

Cannondale...where bouts is that chaincase vent located on the case?

Good news, just bearing gone, shaft is ok,parts ordered and Yamaha agreed to cover. This is the fourth one they have seen fail, all 2014's.
Did not upgrade to 2016 shaft, I was told I am going to like what is coming March 1, I will likely deal sled in.

Whole assy with updated shaft, clips, frame piece with secondary side bearing is under $200. Ordered it today and will order the better chaincase side bearing that MrSled and Shagman posted tomorrow.
