Chain Case Failure?

OK. I was just at my dealer. We put belt back on, fired it up. he put it in reverse and put it in forward gear again and it worked fine. He is contacting Yamaha today as this is the third one he sold that had this issue. The grinding I(we) are hearing when this happens are the two gears not fully engaged. Its sounds bad when it happens. He pulled one aparts and there was no evidence of gear wear or shavings. although, he is changing the gear oil. For reference the dealers do not put any oil in the sleds. The sleds come with all oils filled. The dealers are supposed to just check the levels and top off if needed. Thats it.
The person that talked about the accuator not rotated correctly, you are likely correct. As my dealer spoke to another dealer and this is what they are discovering.
Looks to be an easy fix as far as I know thus far. Hope this helps!
Plan to buy my 22nd new Yamaha sled next year!

There ya go!

From what the dealer indicated, the acctuator that is controlled by the electric solenoid to engage/disengage reverse and forward may not be installed correctly. On all units or some units... who knows. Apparrently this acctuator can be positioned in different positions when installed. i plan to go back there this afternoon or the day after Christmas when they pull it apart to see what this looks like.

First good that it is minor and relatively identifiable. Strange that it seems similar to the reverse issue some '12s had. Apex chain case reverse can be a little finicky too if not adjusted just right. Although I've only heard them grinding and not popping out of gear at speed. Sounds like PDI needs to be altered to make sure the actuators are correctly installed whereas they didn't expect that need. Hope dealers are paying attention and or being filled in.

Good to hear bradsmachine

Glad were getting some clarification of what the actual issue is! And definately glad to here it doesn't involve anything major!!

as someone who literally has a yet-to-be-signed purchase agreement on a 2014 viper sitting next to them at the desk, I would reallllllly like to know what is being done, or what can be done to avoid this issue completely.

my dealer hasnt heard a whisper about anything related to the chaincase or this actuator.

Have your dealer check the actuator on the unit you plan to purchase if you are unsure about the issue . If your dealer is good than your pre delivery inspection should be completed properly. ;)!

right, but this actuator is NOT part of the normal PDI. What are they checking for?

That is why I said have him check it.
Just checked mine. The actuator had a bit of preload and wanted to go to the 1 o clock position. I presume from what has be said that it is installed correctly. Only 46 miles, but it worked good. Also tightened chain 2 turns.

As a FYI.

Just checked my chain tension. 200 miles on the sled.
Turned the chain tensioner bolt in 3 turns before it was tight.

Oil was half way up the glass.

I wonder if the chain they are using in the Viper is stretching?

I'll be keeping check on mine. Normally after 1000 miles and good oil the adjustment stays the same, all brands. Even with having to remove the dxxx muffler I'll keep a check on it.

I am beginning to wonder if they used AC chain supplier or found a new supplier and its prone to stretching more than we are used too?
