If you are upgrading your chain case to a 2017 or new inner case and bearing, you will also have to get the (11) torx-drive screws that secure the inner case to the chassis. Previous years used an M6 x 1.0 x 20 button head cap screw. The 2017 and newer cases use an M6 x 2.0 x 24 self tapping button head cap screw. It is the same as used to secure the oil tank to the outer chain case cover.
You can try to source the screw outside of Yamaha but good luck finding them anywhere. Even Fastenal, McMaster-Carr and Grainger are telling me they cannot get them.

Also, they are self tapping so no more time, equipment, people needed to tap the holes in the inner case. I am a product designer by trade and would also do this to make the same product but make it cheaper with a higher profit margin.

But is it the same? No. Could a guy just drill case to reuse old bolts?

The old bolts/threads are fine thread and both the old and new a M6 diameter so I don't see how you could tap the newer course 2.0 thread and make it the older fine 1.0 thread. Either you are going to have to get the bolts that came with the case you buy or order part number 8JP-RA283-00-00 from Yamaha to get the bolts needed to secure 2017+ inner case to your older chassis.
 
I like the flange nut spreading the load. They come loose so is some forces there

I would just tap the case and replace those cheap-#*$&@ bolts with real ones. I did that on my 14 Viper when I changed that inner case.

I usually agree with you but in this case no. Those bolts are not ever removed. I will tap the case for the self tappers as far as I can without a bottoming tap and then run them in with red Loctite. Oil tank is same thing. cheap bolts yes but if installed right they will never need to be removed.

Oil tank always has had self tappers. Are these different?
 
They are the same as the self tappers for the oil tank. Yamaha is now using them to secure the outer chain case cover to the inner case and the inner case to the chassis. The bolts that pass through the tunnel and tabs of the inner case that have nylok nuts from pre-2017 sleds will still work on the 2017+ inner cases.

No kidding! They did that way back in 12,13. Wonder why they went back?
 
The microfiche for the 2014 -2016 Track Drive 2 schematic that I am looking at show the M6 x 1.0 x 20mm bolts and then the M6 x 2.0 x24mm bolts for 2017+. I am using the schematics from Babbits Online.

Yes but in 12/13 they used self tappers.
