Here are pics I promised.I believe for shims Yamaha goes by 1/2mm in size.Mine came with 1 1mm.With my wore belts removing that was a improvement but belt was dragging a bit to much causing idle to slow down so I went with a smaller than stock one about .020in.Found the shim at dealer It is from the AC Diamond drive.Prefect fit and the shims for that come in .010in sizes.Absolutely perfect now.
As far as the buttons go dont skimp.Buy Yamaha buttons. Some of the aftermarket ones are very poor wearing.

How do you get the belt off on these sleds? just yank and pull like a mo fo??
Put parking brake on,Grab hold of the secondary sheave closest to tunnel with left hand turn it clockwise while pulling up on the belt with right hand. What your doing is opening up the secondary so belt will go into it.Then just slide belt right over primary.

I did this to my sled the other day as the belt was setting just under flush so I removed the shims to have the belt set just above flush as I would of do on any of the other sled ive owned. So i start her up and went for a scoot and when I went to put it in reverse it just beeped and never engaged so I push it again to put it in forward and no go,so next I shut it off and restarted it and it was in forward again, done everthing again and same problem. So I put the sled in the garage and done everthing over and over with the same problem. Then I put it on the rear jack stand so track was able to move, next i started it up pushed the reverse button and it engaged right away and push it again and she went in forward.Next I put it back on the floor and tried it all again with no go,put it on jack and everthing is good, weird hey all I can figure is that it has too much tension what do you guys figure?
If you have reverse this process which has worked for years is going to cause reverse engagement issues. You can probably come to a compromise between good forward engagement and performance by using those .010 shims and getting belt as high as possible with good reverse. Will be closer than the 1/2mm shims available from Yamaha. If I had reverse I would shim it properly and figure out a way to engage reverse. Some push thier sled a little with feet and some I know engage reverse while rolling very very slowly. To get the gears to engage.

Thanks for the info, took my secondary off to get at the bearing to give the bearing some love, now that I have the secondary off looking at doing this tomorrow.
Is there anything I can do to the primary maintenance wise? Is there a write up some one has done?

There is some pucks and the pins and weights that wear but Primary wear on Yamahas is real minimal.Cleaning it and inspection would be my advice unless you see something.

Cannon,
Great detailed pics, is that like the shim you told me to add in my "reverse engagement" thread?
It comes in a standard thickness?
