My dealer says it's about $900 bucks to have them do the install. He figures 8-10hrs of work. So for about $3k total you can get to 180HP with reliability at low boost.

So they charge $100/hr? Yikes..my stage 1 kit didn't even cost me that much in labor..and that was at a yamaha dealer.

Been doing more research and talking to different people on this topic "turbo". One concern is if I purchase the "turbo", is making sure I can get the proper fuel for it in remote areas such as the U.P of Michigan. They say nothing less than 91 octane with this kit.
My other thought is just adding a exhaust can, air induction, and clutch work ilo the the cost of the turbo. I realize the turbo will provide significantly more power but it seems these things still can be quirky and most guys recommend AFR gauge and Boost gauges even though it says they are not required. It's designed to be out of the box use but I'm still searching for confidence in it.

My curiousity got the best of me. I will have one MPI turbo and one done as you described, in fact it is already built. Should be an interesting comparison.

Leaning toward getting the turbo. Spoke with Matt at MPI and am feeling confident that this setup has been tested thoroughly and will be a durable feature. Sounds like the setup is pretty easy and at $48/hp gain it just can't be matched.
Looking forward to riding!

I'm leaning very hard as well, depending what Yamaha does with the whole RTX LE shock deal.

I would think for $3000.00 you could get the turbo and have it installed. Clutching, gauges, etc. is extra. I would recommend a 4 wheel kit for the rear skid also. As an owner of a Cat 1100 Turbo I would say the boosted viper should beat a stock cat handily. The problem is add a cheap tune and a better exhaust to the cat and it's a different story. A low boost viper should be a great sled for a fast trail sled, just don't line up with a louder than normal 1100 Turbo.

Been there done that lol only with a stock viper vs a 280hp cat turbo, surprisingly enough the stock viper could launch out on the turbo pretty good, I think with a 180hp viper that is setup well it'll give a good scare to some tuned cat turbos in some shorter distance races. The few I've raced it took prolly 500 feet before the turbos came past, but if I was doing 60-70 they were doing 100 and are gone in a hurry lol
