LOL...Ya the cat is kind of a slug out of the hole, but watch out once she gets rollin'. The other thing you have to watch out for if you line up with one, is if the Cat is back firing & poppin, you might get gated too. The antilag feature on some programs flat out works. 5-10 lbs of boost off the line is a great equalizer to these smaller quick sleds.Been there done that lol only with a stock viper vs a 280hp cat turbo, surprisingly enough the stock viper could launch out on the turbo pretty good, I think with a 180hp viper that is setup well it'll give a good scare to some tuned cat turbos in some shorter distance races. The few I've raced it took prolly 500 feet before the turbos came past, but if I was doing 60-70 they were doing 100 and are gone in a hurry lol
I really do hope Yamaha gets enough data from everyone who is trying a turbo this year, so that they consider a factory model within the next year or two. I sell Yamahas, and to be honest we need some more excitement out of the Yamaha Lineup.

Ya outta the few I've lined up with, 2 were at 280hp both runnin studders on the launch, one hooks up good, the other not as good, viper will still launch out on both of them, the one that comes out slower is quite a lot faster but not as quick as the other turbo, when the one comes past he is going quite a lot faster, when the other comes past he about blows you off the sled lol. I did do a roll on against one with just a 220hp flash and nothing else, I was actually quite surprised it took as long as it did for him to comes past, that instant jump of the viper is hard to match in a roll on race. Hoping now with the turbo it has all the same snap as before..and a lot more power after that lol

It should still have the snap and maybe a little more because you are running stock compression. The Cat is lazy out of the hole because the stock compression is considerably lower, but that allows us to run more boost. Everything is a compromise.Ya outta the few I've lined up with, 2 were at 280hp both runnin studders on the launch, one hooks up good, the other not as good, viper will still launch out on both of them, the one that comes out slower is quite a lot faster but not as quick as the other turbo, when the one comes past he is going quite a lot faster, when the other comes past he about blows you off the sled lol. What kind of installation cost are your dealers giving everybody. Mine told me 12 to 14 hrs and said that's what yamaha quoted them to do them in thought that was kinda crazy and that doesn't include clutching and tuning. At 79 dollars per hour . Really drives that price outta here
Studroes144
TY 4 Stroke God
That's ridiculous! My stage 1 only took 9 hours, the trail kit has no innercooler and I'm sure a decent amount less hose rerouting, that 9 hours included mounting and setting up my gauges

Well guys, after reading this thread,I want to offer a bit of a sales pitch.I want to offer a direct comparison of the MPI Yamaha approved 180hp turbo kit to the Hurricane 190hp turbo kit.First off I want to say nothing bad about the guys at MPI.Im sure that they love this sport like the rest of us.
Lets compare price first.I understand that the MPI kit sells for about $2200 and takes 9-11 hours to install at a dealer install cost of $700-$900 to install totaling upwards of $3100.This kit is Yamaha approved but Im not sure its warranty approved. The Hurricane 190hp kit sells for $3495 and takes 2 hours to install at a dealer cost of about $158 using the same labor rate totaling $3695.The Hurricane kit is $595 more expensive. What do you get for the extra cost in the Hurricane 190hp kit?A Garrett ball bearing fast spool turbo, larger injectors for proper fuel control on long high speed runs, controlled by Powercomander5,seasoned and proven high mileage performance, able to run on 87 octane and best of all,the Hurricane 190hp kit actually makes 193hp.An extra 13hp.At $47 per HP,that's worth $611.And easily up gradable to 240hp not to mention the Hurricane Viper 400hp kit.
I admire the people at MPI for there business sense and again I have nothing bad to say about the Guys but I want to show what we are offering at Hurricane Performance as a choice to consumers.
We have worked hard at Hurricane Performance to develop the most powerful and RELIABLE turbo kit for the Yamaha Viper that will not alter the sled permanently in anyway so as to enhance the value during ownership as well as trade in.

I can't disagree...I for one have been undecided and do not really like the idea of losing the 3yr warranty I would get with the snow check. Your system seems to address some of my initial concerns regarding running proper pump gas (yours runs on 87) in the U.P of Michigan and I like the larger injectors for a long WOT runs. In addition, the extra HP you mention is nice too. Thanks for sharing!

Correct me if I'm wrong but the $2200 turbo kit from yamaha is for spring order customers only, if you want to buy the kit for $2200 you have to give up your 3 year warranty and settle for a 1 year warranty, you can however buy back the additional 2 years of warranty, this is coming from someone that got it settled with their dealer and posted the info on the Facebook page. I believe the additional 2 years was $5xx. So for $2700-$2800 you get the trail kit with 3 years of warranty. Not sure if this is accurate but like I said in taking it from someone that made the calls and did the research. I have yet to hear an actual install time on the mpi kit, maybe Matt can shed some light on that.

As for the long wot runs, check out the video that mpi posted, they show a 2 minute dyno run at wot with their kit. Figure a turbo viper at say 115 mph for 2 minutes, I really doubt as tho anyone will be trying anything like that, but atleast you know that it's been proven. Heard nothing but good things about both mpi and hurricane kits, just need to get all the facts lined up before a true comparison can be made

I have only done research on the MPI kit as of yet. Just starting on Hurricane.
For the Yamaha deal it is $2200 and give up the extra warranty yes. Add the warranty back in for $500 makes it $2700. No word on warranty implications although most assume that it will get a pass due to the OE endorsement
Further complicate that by the fact that some dealers may be passing along a discount on the $3299 MPI kit makes it an even tougher decision.
As for the 87 octane question I asked Matt at MPI about this and his response was simply switch down the boost vie electronic wastegate.
As for HP claims/wars, 7 psi and 210 HP I believe that most any properly sized turbo kit on the market can do this. It's a matter of how far you want to push things.
I'd like to hear more about the 2hr install versus the 5-6hr (stated as 9-11 by Hurricane) for the MPI.
Any pdf instructions online for either?
I see Hurricane at least has a navigable web site with a few pics of an installed turbo kit. Somebody needs a camera other than a cell phone.

Ulmer has some interesting pics on his Facebook page, check them out, they're in regards to what can and can't be done for boost application on a stock engine. 6 psi is a safe bet on pump gas, 7 you may be able to squeak by but from some of the pics I've seen of pistons and heads, I'm not about to try it on pump fuel. Race fuel is a different story but I'm afraid there aren't many pumps you can pull up to and fill up with 110 octane fuel, as for turbo capabilities, mpi has stated that they have a sled running 250hp on a stage 1 kit with stock compression, no head shim or low comp pistons, the key is running the race fuel and adding the extra injector/bigger fuel pump or whatever it is they do. The engine and the turbo are capable, the fuel system is not.

My dealer confirmed that if you choose the MPI turbo you drop back to just the 1yr Manf. warranty. You can add "YES" warranty at the following prices:
1 yr. - $600
2 yr. - $700
3 yr. - $900
So to get back the full 3 yr warranty offer on the snowcheck would cost you $700 (2 yr.YES warranty plus 1 yr manf. warranty = 3yr total)
1 yr. - $600
2 yr. - $700
3 yr. - $900
So to get back the full 3 yr warranty offer on the snowcheck would cost you $700 (2 yr.YES warranty plus 1 yr manf. warranty = 3yr total)

Locally the prices for AvGas 100LL is $6.12/gal and 110 race fuel is $8.43. I've done the race fuel setup in the past. I'm looking forward to the pump gas setup this go round.

My warranty quote:
Warranty you may still purchase at regular cost of $400 one extra year,
$500 for two years, or $600 for three year.
As for the gas thing aside from switching back the boost, I have used a product called Rocket Fuel in my HD with good results. It states with on it "Not for use with Jap bikes" and I'm not sure why except that maybe it was designed for big bore/stroke engines?
A "pocket pack" of octane boost would be nice to have.
