I was curious to see how the the torque numbers would compare between the Apex and the Sidewinder. So I overlaid what information we have on the new motor with dyno test results from the Amsnow article on the 2011 Apex and this is how it looks. And Yes, I realize this was a pre-production Sidewinder that was dyno tested so don't shoot the messenger!

okay...so what does this tell you then that we didnt already know?
Honestly I didn't think the triple in the sidewinder would make more torque than the 4 holer of the Apex.

the 4 holer only makes torque because of the reduction unit....it ends up acting like a torque multiplier...actually the three cylinder has a torque advantage and then add boost and all bets are off...just wait til a re flash is laid on it ...

If it has more HP it has to have more torque or maintain torque at a higher RPM! I guess I don't under stand why every one wants to compare the two? One is NA and one Turboed, the turbo certainly should make more power! The 998 Apex motor at 9lb boost will make 35+ more hp! Now that's a fair comparison!

Not sure if you took both motors at peak hp for not having a turbo attached how the torque would look, may be a lot closer, but any turbo makes huge torque way early in the rpm range,my twin turbos in my f-150 eco make max torque way down low, below 2000 rpms that makes for nice towing.Honestly I didn't think the triple in the sidewinder would make more torque than the 4 holer of the Apex.
I just remember testing a turbo viper last year and came away thinking it just didn't pull like the Apex. I sure would be disappointed if i laid out $16k and really didn't feel like the Sidewinder had considerably more power.

HP and torque are related. HP is a made up mathematical figure based on torque and rpm. 4 hole makes more torque then the 3 hole at any same given clutch rpm if the the 3 made the same or more torque then the 4 then hp would be the same or higher. The 3 hole has no torque advantage. Boost increases torque and that makes more hp!

The Apex has almost the same torque from clutch engagement to full rpm, a very flat torque curve. It is one of the best qualities of the motor. It basically pulls hard at any rpm. The 998 turbo will of course pull harder on top but as the dyno shows it is much peakier on top. I've never seen a dyno report start at 6,500 rpm except on a high strung two stroke. For some reason they are not showing from 3,500 like they have with the 3 and 4 cylinders before it. Why one can only guess, maybe it does not as I suspect have as flat a power curve. That being said it will stretch your arms out on top and if you like the Turbo Viper you will love this. Other wise wait and test drive one. I know I want to test one.

Nytro made a hair under 90 from 6100-7100.
Highest apex made in that range was 75.6. Although it peaked at 83.5 @ 8500
Same dyno same day

If you look up you will see that at the same clutch speed the Apex makes over a 100.

I just looked through multiple DTR dyno sheets. I never see tq go over low 80s. I think 83.5 was the most I saw on any stock Apex.

Unless you're referring to tq before the gear reduction - in which case you're correct. But the clutch sees the reduction so that number is pointless to me.

Simpler said: Torque is the "force" applied to crankshaft & Horsepower is "rate'' at which the torque is appliedHP and torque are related. Must be, 83# is definitely before the reduction. Most Apex/Phazer dyno sheets I see show the actually engine output and not the Clutch output. The Phazer REALLY looks bad at 40ft-lbs @ 8800 , but the clutches actually see 57 # @ 6200Unless you're referring to tq before the gear reduction - in which case you're correct. But the clutch sees the reduction so that number is pointless to me.
