That's the problem with this. It is up to the DNR agent cause it says any alterations or aftermarket exhaust that changes the sound or amplifies it. 2 yrs ago I was in Hurley with the Pro R 800 with a can on it that was stamped certified 86 db (which they now require the can to be stamped) There was X games going on with pro open class sleds jumping a 20 ft high snow pile and the DNR stopped me made me open the side panel. took my license and gave me 1 hour to return with the stock muffler on it or get ticket. I did it then went back and changed it back and rode the opposite Direction

Here is the Michigan rule from the DNR website.

Noise: Each snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1977, shall be equipped with a muffler that does not exceed 78 decibels of sound pressure at 50 feet as measured by the 1974 SAEJ-192a.

Did some testing tonight and my girlfriend was at an area where the reading matched MBRP ' S reading. It was about 20-25 feet away. The readings match at 15mph or taking off along with idle. So, 84 dB at idle (exhaust side), part throttle or 15mph 87 dB. Full throttle was high and don't believe it cause wind and asphalt ricochet doesn't count.

The Evolution muffler was 82 dB idle, 85 dB at 15mph.... same distance and also said higher amount at full throttle cause of the wind and asphalt ricochet.

More testing to come.....

This is real simple. The test is basically the same as the ATv test 4500rpm stationary 4 meters away. If it's over 84db it fails. I have seen at least 100 Atv's and dirt bikes pass this test. Not all were stock exhaust. They were all noticeably quiet and would never be heard any more than a car would if your windows were closed on your house and it went by 50 ft away. That and power is the goal to achieve.

Lots of variables and acoustic issues with testing as we know. My statment was that based on the sound clip I did not think Ulmer's can was very loud. Keep in mind they are testing in a garage with concrete floors too...

You need one of those old clutches from back in the 70's where you could pull out a knob and lock it out to warm up the engine.

My experience in Colorado is limited as I tend to ride where the Rangers don't, but here it seems to be "If your an #*$&@ then you don't pass" unspoken rule. I did ride a very loud Nytro past rangers a couple years ago I just played it cool and they ignored me.

That's how I look at it here in Michigan. Most of us know the trail crossings where we might see officers and if you just ease it on by you're not going to have a problem. There are still some really loud sleds out there, so in comparison mine sound tame.

That's why the test is stationary. Even cars the tires on road are louder than exhaust by far. Put a old belt on and hold the brake. I wouldn't go longer than a 2 count but that's plenty of time for a reading.
