Fixing loud clutch

Step 1) Take out the primary roller pins and grind 30 thou of them and reinstall. The bolts will now tighten against the casting and stop rattling. Not to much as you don't want to stress the casting. Then get very thin washers (need to dig up the Yamaha part number) and install them on the sides of the fly weights to stop them rattling around. Voila, no more ball bearings in a tin can.

So after having just under 2500 on my winder the clutch was getting pretty noisy. So before I started to play with the stub shaft I decided to see where the noise is coming from first.
Is it coming from the shaft or clutch after this many miles and wear. I bolted on a new clutch and the noise just about disappeared. So the noise is mainly coming from the clutch and not the the stub shaft. Just as quite as new now.
So I started to compare the difference between the play on my clutch vs the new. Couple things that stood out was 1) the side to side play of the weights on my clutch was double of the new one 2) the side to side play on the rollers was a bit more than new. 3) the roller bolts have just started to wear into the spyder and had a bunch of side to side play.

I dug through a bunch of my 20 yrs + of clutching, jetting and other misc bins and found a pack of small shims for yamaha weights. ( not sure who made them. bender maybe).
I installed these on both the weight pins and roller pins along with carefully using emery cloth to the OEM plastic washers to get the right distance without binding the rollers or weights. I also used some small washers and tiny o-rings on the roller bolts to take out the side to side play on them.
After reinstalling my old clutch and running at a idle and running on the bench it is now 10x quieter than a new stock winder clutch. Only time will tell if the noise comes back. I plan on putting 1000 miles plus over the next week and will see how it turns out.

Sorry no pics as of now. Was rushing to get done before I take off for my trip.

I just want to hear nothing but wind when I go by my buddies 850 again. Truth be told I still beat him the last time out with a broken primary spring and was only turning around 8100 RPM.
Noise or not! broken spring or not! I will still be waiting for him with the power of this sled. Lol.
Hum, what does this mean?

Any update here?

Will Yamaha be addressing and fixing this for the 18 Winders?? Man I hope so??? For this kind of Jing for a Sled...I don't want a junky sounding rattle coming from my New Sidewinder next winter!! Any word from Reps if this will be remedied??? Any info is appreciated!

My current Apex(2007 GT), the primary rattles in that...has from day one. I got used to it and practically don't even hear it now(but ofcourse it's still there). Anybody come off an Apex who has a 2017 Sidewinder now, is the clutch rattle louder than the Apex's?? I was hoping going up 11 model years(that's a big jump), that Yamaha would have figured out a way to not have their primary's rattle. So hoping the 18's next season are fixed/improved with regard to this matter.

The clutch rattle is in a different league than my apex. Apex has never had much for rattle problems. Sidewinder sounds like it is physically coming apart. Gotten significantly louder once I hit 1000 miles it seemed too.

Holy crap!! That needs to be addressed..that's BS!! I put down a deposit on an 18 Sidewinder because I have a quality Yamaha product in my Apex. I went with another Yamaha because I thought that their quality was second to none. This is very disappointing to hear!! Maybe should have went with the T-Cat instead?? God I hope they do something about this for model year 18!!??

Well,i got news for anyone who may be comparing a clutch rattle to a team primary clutch that is cracking badly by 2000 miles, enough to blow up,so the guys who compare cats stuff to yamahas stuff, yamaha still has a tick higher good quality above cats, but the two are closing in on each other, and not in a good way.

Friend of mine has the thunder cat and it rattles also. That's because the majority of the noise comes from the stub shaft.

Imagine my surprise today when I opened up my primary clutch for cleaning and found these inside:

I can't hear any rattle or whatever .
I also have ridden a 4 cylinder Genesis droner , since 03 , so i can't hear much of anything anymore .
If you don't believe me , just ask my wife !!

Man, not sure what's going on with your sleds but mine barely rattles at all. I certainly don't hear it when I ride and stopped it's barely noticeable

I noticed that mine didn't rattle hardly at all when it was new. (Comparing mine to my buddies with 500 miles on it, his rattled bad) Now I have 300plus miles and mine rattles too.
