GPS setups on newer apex's

I like that setup. Is the plastic durable enough to mount the base to it without possibly cracking? Or did you put some washers behind it to reinforce? Also, how good is the display on the garmin 60 series? Waterproof?

Here is a pic of the backside of that installation, where I used a piece of aluminum as a backing plate (which is bent to match the shape of the plastic) with nylon locknuts. The other modification is to file the back of the ball-mount base, so that it matches-up to the curvature of the plastic panel. i have done two sleds like this, and after 2 seasons, everything is good as new.

The color display on the 60 series is very good... the unit is waterproof (I also use it on my wave runner), and it supports most aftermarket mapping software.

:jump:

Lol on the waterproof. My GPS60C that i use today spent 3 weeks mounted to the bars of my 06 GT while it sat on the bottom of Deep Creek Lake until I was able to the guy to salvage it.

Im thinkin of getting a larger screen non waterproof nuvi and just putting it in my map/tank bag. I may not have touch screen functionality through the clear plastic of the map bag but thats not a big deal.

If you are thinking about a Nuvi, and are concerned, Ram-mount sells a Aqua-box that it will mount in. You can use the touch screen thru the face of it. It runs about $50 or so if I remember. I have one that I use of the bike if it looks rainy and use it on the sled if there is heavy or wet snow in the forcast. That being said, I use my Nuvi on most days on the sled with just the regular mount and have not had any problems.

Does the Aqua box allow for a charger cord to come through from the outside?

Here you go, from Ram Mounts:
>> Power, earphone and accessory cables are routed through a patented, self draining baffle design to keep moisture out.

What nuvi model do you have? I went with the 1490. So with the overall dimensions of that it looks lime i would need the medium/wide size aqua box...? I sent an email to ram but havent heard back yet.

I think Ram has all the bases covered! I searched Ebay and found a couple hundred listings for the Aquabox.

here is my setup. fits in there perfectly and i can still use the touchscreen through the plastic. i run the charging cable right out the side through the zipper.

I never considered a tank bag. Good idea!

Yeah this is my 2nd apex i have had with a tank bag now. I really like having the extra storage. Plus it protects the plastic on the tank shroud. Now its a high tech digital map bag! Ha!

I use the same setup. My Spot Messenger , GPS, and cell all ride right there. Have 1on my 06 Attak and my 11 apex XTX. The side pockets and bag hold let's of stuff! I'm 6'3" and boon dock the Attak. Never interferes with my movement. The 11 is strictly a trail sled, and the bag again, never interferes.

Good to know.
