GPS setups on newer apex's

GPS Mount on apex

i've had 3 or 4 of these Garmin 255W GPS. they are dirt cheap, $20 fleabay or pretty much any Pawn shop.Make sure to buy one with a SD slot to load your maps on.
I use the stock windshield mount, pull the little pin to remove suction cup mount, couple seconds on each side with a 4" grinder to shave down the plastic round base so it fits snuggly flat on the Riser.2 Self tappers and a 1/8th Drill bit.the risers are a good 1/8 to 3/16th thick aluminum.
screw her on good and snug, run the wire up under handlebar pad and down the other side.i used a $5 Female 12 volt plug from Canadian Tire, Hardwired into my existing 12 volt plug, for looks and to keep that free in case i want to bring my phone.
I too have left the Nuvi 255W on my sled all winter, and for $20, i bought couple extra spare units ,all loaded with Trakmaps NB just in case one got stolen,or crapped out, which it never did.
Total investment $20=Garmin Nuvi 255W
$5 =2 gig SD card
$5 =Female acc Plug
$50 = Trackmaps NB Snowmobile
30 mins install = FREE

Been there, done that, i wasn,t aware there was a Voltage regulator and fuse in thart GPS cord End, and the wiresare very tiny, like hairs, lol.I fried the first unit, guess it didn,t like full 12 volt. You can just wire your Ground directly to the side spring terminals on the plugin though, and unscrew the little end that pushes in, and slide a pos wire in there, and tape it up good,to elimate buying the $5 Female End.

What I do is take apart the plug in adapter for whatever I want to power. I take it apart and wrap it up good and wire the + and - sides to the accessory outlet. Factory plug. DONE.

40 bucks off mount

www.trailsystems.com has 40 bucks off their mount right now if someone was interested.

Says the first 30 to like them on Facebook will get the discount.
I don't have a facebook and never will.

So I went through the checkout process anyway and still got the discount.

I wound up tapping my Lake Effect riser for a 1" ram ball to put my iPhone right in the center of the bars/riser below my speedo. I will be/have been using my iPhone with imotoneige and GPS Kit app. Its expensive but I wound up getting a LifeProof case and 2 belt clips and put a Ram diamond plate ball on one of the belt clips. Cool thing about the LifeProof case is I can do the same thing on the ATVs and wave runners and I can use the phone in the water/pool.

Also I can make collections of waypoints tracks or routes and put them in my Dropbox account and only load what I need in to GPS Kit for the day and easily share my data collections.

Garmin Montanna 600, VV Mapping maps, Ram powered mount tapped in to wiring for factory power plug.

Late revival, but just getting ready for winter and trying to set mine up. How does the iphone work with the lifeproof as far as freezing in the cold? My worry is that it won't work without some heat source.

I gave up on the iPhone as my primary GPS largely due to battery life Limitation. The iPhone would last a max of 1/2 day on the wave runner while navigating and in cold conditions it would last even less even when charging. I went to a Garmin Montana 600 for the bigger screen and better processor but for sledding ATV ing and waverunners I would recommend a non touchscreen device. I had serious issues on the wave runner where I couldn't unlock the iphone to check my route on an open water crossing in rough waves due to the screen being covered in water. Once in a while snow would mistakenly register as a touch on my Montana screwing up my routing. I still use my phones location abilities for imotoneige in Quebec as a 2nd opinion on map discrepancy but the phone stays in my bibs to keep warm to preserve the battery and stream music.
