Maybe it's just me: ( I know it still summer and not many on here... But..)
Looking at the Manual for the timing chain, It says Rotate Clockwise till Piston #3 is at TDC on "Compression Stroke"
But if I look at this diagram in the manual, Intake Cam lobe "c" is in the position that if rotated ClockWise will open the intake valves which puts it at TDC after EXHAUST & just before the INPUT STROKE not Compression stroke as the manual mentions.
The piston go up during compression, at TDC it fires & piston goes down, Back up is Exhaust Stroke and at that TDC is where the picture is...

It all works for timing, just not the "compression stroke"..

Don't worry about the stroke. Piston #3 @ TDC, put the cams (intake lobes at 4 o'clock & exhaust lobes at 8 o'clock) in with dots lined up and you'll be fine. Manual is confusing.

What if the piston does not go all the way to TDC by using the flywheel marks?

Are you still lining up the shaft cam oil holes at 12 o clock? If I do so my intake valve hits piston right away.

If I back off the intake cam 2 teeth it clears the piston. Engine still won't run.

If you're lining up your flywheel TDC mark and it's not at actual TDC on #3 piston (closest to the magneto), then you're either doing it incorrectly or your flywheel key is sheared and the flywheel is no longer correct.

How do you make the flywheel correct? Only 1 way to put it on. I did 2 sled trips. Sled was starting to run rough. So I did the valve shimming. Tie wrap let go then lost the chain slipping on teeth. Want to line it up correctly. But now it won't as per manuel. Definitely have chain stretch.

Had flywheel apart days before my trip cause I changed starter and the gear.

Also 18 pin from e to I. I've tried multiple ways. No other way to do this. But yes flywheel has come to my mind cause it just doesn't make sense that it's not lining up. Or if it does then it hits intake valve 3 dam near instantly. If I back off intake cam 2 teeth it clears and piston is basically at TDC. But then flywheel mark is 2in away.

I'm on vacation this week. Just can't get this correct so I can go out.

If you didn't tighten the flywheel tight enough when you removed it, it's possible the key sheared in the crankshaft and the flywheel has turned on the crank causing it to not be in the correct location.

That's exactly what happened thanks. Sheared the key. But as for not being tight enough that part kinda weird 94 ft pounds Is what I did. And again today.

The only time I've seen the flywheel key shear was when the engine backfired causing a kick back during startup.
