Well if the law says 87? Then they have to give a decent guy a ticket if he's 89.I may be wrong but...I doubt anyone is going to get a ticket for a couple DB's over the limit, they are looking for the LOUD ones. It's possible, but as stated here there are variables and the officers know that. It would be like giving someone a ticket on the Eway for 3-4 MPH over the limit and that never happens. Someone might want to call a DNR friend who can shed some real light on this.
If a guy let's some go and tickets others- that's not right, they would get NO argument from me for ticketing out of control reckless trail riders, because of the death factor. But this is just being allowed to go down a bad path.
We all have seen and know when a ticket is warranted.
But I don't support taking DECENT folks hard earned money for no reason.

After my post above, I called the DNR officer listed at the top of the page in the news release for some clarification. He told me there are different testing procedures depending on the type of sled (2S or 4S) and for the way a sled was made (rear exhaust, down exhaust etc). He said the testing procedure was NOT developed by the DNR but by the Society of Engineers -for the snowmobile manufacturers. He said IF a sled was a couple DB's over it would be up to the officer to decide whether to ticket or not - depending primarily if the sled had been modified in anyway. He said if my Yamaha is a "stock sled" with a "stock exhaust" I have no chance of getting a ticket.

I would like to get that in writing that I have NO chance of ticket.
Wondering if all these high dollar aftermarket exhaust's that look stock but are 2db over will be ticketed.
Some oem exhaust are replaced due to worn out, and nobody I now can afford a dealer price stock exhaust.
All exhaust descriptions say barley louder than stock, kinda splitting hairs here
I just got worn out from typing.

I've always wanted to see what reading a WI or MI DNR officer would get on a stock Cat ZRT600. Man, those are some sweet sounding stock pipes!
FWIW - the DNR is after the LOAD pipes...the ones that scream BRAPPPPPP! Or the LOAD and modded 4S pipes.....like the load Hauck pipes that somebody was talking about here recently.
Sorry....the offenders know who they are.....if you get a ticket you deserve it. I've been sick and tired for years (but yet I keep doing it cuz I LOVE this sport!) having to beg landowners to keep a trail open across his property.

I'm not worried about a decibel or two, but I agree with 4StrokeLuvr111. Everyone got upset at the end of last year when it was announced that one of our trails was shut down. Everyone got mad at the land owner for not giving permission to go through his property which caused the trail to be shut down. But it comes back to us sledders not being respectful. Using loud pipes/race pipes, BRAPPPing the throttle, going off trail on private property... This is why trails get shut down and for those who belong to the clubs and lobby for the rest of us, we aren't making their job easy. We need to start policing our own.I've always wanted to see what reading a WI or MI DNR officer would get on a stock Cat ZRT600. Man, those are some sweet sounding stock pipes!

I can see this from both sides, I never thought about adding a pipe to my sled until i bought my old one with the Skinz Ultra Q, just enough tone but not obnoxious, i would never go any louder than this Ultra. I realize i am probably flirting with the LEGAL limit but im not worried as i have to tell most people it even has different exhaust on it as it sounds so close to stock in the lower revs. on the other hand if i get a ticket its $250 and i will put my stock pipe back on as i know i am close but i doubt that will happen as i am courteous and understanding of the DNR as well as the homeowners.....if i were to get stopped and checked i know i should be max of 5 db over and knowing many law enforcement officers this isnt enough to waste their time (much like 3 or 4 mph over the limit on freeway) as long as i am courteous and calm.

Bottom line...Loud Pipes/Exhaust = closed trails. If we want to keep our privilege to use the land in our great state (including private land) we need to police ourselves as much as the MDNR. If we continue to be more worried about a extra 1-5 HP by adding a loud pipe and not worry about who we piss off it won't matter because we will all be riding around our yard with no place to go.
Just remember that one loud sled will cancel out the 100 quiet sleds that passed the home of a landowner that has allowed us to use HIS land to ride across.

That's where they're at in NY. People doing dumb things push the landowners buttons and so now they want to really bust chops on exhaust to soothe landowners and inject some money into the DEC and states coffers. They have levels set forth that will now be 84dB (3 dB lower than last year). No tickets for "Stock exhausts found to be in good condition and proper working order" which means if your muffler is stock but you burned the packing out (or you removed it) then your going to get the ticket. So if from the factory your exhaust was miraculously 91 dB (federal standards REQUIRE 87dB or less) then you get a pass up to 91dB. The NYSP rep said they don't care what exhaust you install, you could run it open header if you like, but if it doesn't meet the noise standard they're gonna write the ticket, and were toying with 10dB over the sled is going to an impound and released to a shop of your choosing to be repaired. Its pay to play days in the Empire State.

One reason I left the communist state of NY. Pay through the nose on property tax. Pay through the nose on sales tax. Pay through the nose on registering sleds and joining a club. And pay through the nose just for the sake of paying through the nose because apparently you haven't payed through the nose enough yet. Here is what I say to the communist state of NYIts pay to play days in the Empire State.

Just called Wisconsin DNR (James) and have a local agent coming over sometime this week to do some testing. Each county has their own agents that will do this. DNR also confirmed what has been being said.....they are looking for the ones that have the 2 stroke scream and rappy 4 stroke exhaust. Also, he said that if you are over a couple, they understand that and will let you go. But, if you are rude about it and stress why you got pulled over or individually targeted....you might get a ticket.
But, my main concern is the "legal aftermarket exhausts" which I have and want to compare decibel readings to theirs.
I had a ZRT 600, all stock and think my ears were permanently damaged by how loud that was. Crazy how that sled all stock will pass is beyond me.
All good points guys.... Let's just keep our cool

They need to figure out another way to do the test ,without burning up my belt ! Thats not cool . Some sleds in gage lower than 3500 and the DB test is at 4000 rpm. DNR told me its holding your brake and rev to 4000 and hold .
Next it will be writing me up for my Ram Air Lid ... That's loud when I nail it ..

They are welcome to have me hold it at 4000 rpm as long as they are willing to pick the back of the sled up for me. Otherwise my answer is simply give me my ticket and I will see you in court in a month or so. Not burning up belts over something like this.
I have no issues with enforcement and deal with the dnr several times a summer with my job. Always been a positive experience with no exception.
This however, I see going bad often with a lot of guys. Pass or fail.
My engagement is at 3200. No way in hell am I going to hold the brake for almost another 1000 rpm so they can figure out which button to push.

Then you would have track noise also ...

I believe they revised the test for newer sleds that measures at 2500rpm.

I'll keep my GOPRO filming for the court date, because I will Damn sure fight it.It's all bullshit. Easy ticket to fight.
Sound is discretionary. The environment is not controlled when you are standing on the trail.
There is no way to consistently check sleds unless you where in a proper studio.
