I have yet to hear a sled that I could not drowned out with our Harleys, so what's the difference?

well they do have their own laws...I have a feeling our's will be enforced much more than others..
OK, here is my 2 cents.....
First off, noise..... to me and many other snowmobiliers, there is nothing sweeter than a mildly piped sled, like the excell on my attak (which i think at WOT is 92db).... now there is no reason to run a full race exhaust on a sled for the trails, ie whiteknuckles race version, but people do it..... so in favor, NO, but is it a problem, for a few.
and SPEED, now this is the worst verbage ever.... reasonable? what is reasonable, well that all depends on conditions, sleds, traffic, rider abilities, etc, can a law officer determine all of those factors? NO, so definately against it, i do agree that there are people that ride too fast for conditions and are a danger to others on the trails, but come up with a better law than reasonable speed,,,, how about reckless/careless operation? ie, running people off of trails and causing problems/wrecks.
At any rate, I am opposed to the new legislation and I am also a member of MSA. Laws like this will also open doors to closing off our offtrail riding opportunities, acess to towns, etc.

As far as a speed limit on the tails I don't think we're going to see it. If they do, they are going to have to go out and mark every sharp curve with a maximum speed limit. Also they're going to have to research stuff like "site distance". I don't see this happening. Maybe around and thru towns you might see it but not everywhere. I could be wrong. The way the State of Michigan operates under this brainless Governor, anything is Possible.

I am from Wisconsin and was riding near Marquette a couple a years ago and was cited for "imprudent speed." I asked the officer where the speed limit sign was as I did not remember seeing one and he said that there was a sign about 3 miles back. The sign was on a 4' x 4' board with 1 inch letters. I would have had to stop to read the paragraph that was written on it. I then asked how fast is too fast. He said about 60 to 65 MPH. This was a railroad grade. Bottom line, if you want me to go slow in an area then post a speed limit instead of some having some vague "enforcement area". Hope everyone fights this bill. I will never go back to the area.

Already got speed limits in U.P. As far as changing speed limits for curves, ... They just set the speed limit everywhere at the slowest speed to ensure you make all the worst turns. No need to change them for the open areas. They did it in Marquette County already.Superman said:As far as a speed limit on the tails I don't think we're going to see it. Also, reasonable is simple. If you get in a wreck, you were going too fast. Basically it is a "wreck tax."
But, I detest the excessively loud sleds and motorcycles. Maybe, the strategy is to drag the Harleys into the mix by indicating that we can't seem to enforce the existing laws with them, why add new ones we can not enforce. Worst case, we fix our niose problems and the Harley's too.
Now here is the rant: I really do hate that Harley racket, all weekend long, every summer weekend. The only time that Harley racket stops is when there is a crash, and they are all stopped watching them load the meatwagon. Then comes the sirens. It is past time to do something with the bikers in Baldwin. Hopefully, we snowmobilers are not here yet. ??

Well boys and girls I just received a response from MSA Executive director Bill Manson and he informed me that the MSA requested this legislation. This surprised me. I had said I would follow their lead but I didn't realize they were the requestor. Seems as though it is quite a serious issue. If I can figure out how to cut and paste I will post it later for everyone to read but everyone going to Novi might want to stop in to the MSA booth and discuss it with them.

it's only serious to a handful of people who are in the msa's hip pocket and obviously control them...
it is not in the best interest of snowmobiling no matter what they say about the trail closings...between the limited season...high price of fuel..machines..etc...permit fees going up every year or two..if we harass the sledders there wont be a need for trails...this is a serious issue alright and the msa does not represent the best interest of michigan snowmobilers...and if one land owner or two has a problem handle it locally....not more laws that hit our sport in the wallet and freedoms..the dnr will be busting our behinds boys...and you bet it will be an excuse to check for alcohol....(i am against alcohol while riding)...
if you go to novi I urge you to let them know how you feel about your rights being choked further and them wasting the states valuable resources on our 3 month sport to appease a few...

I go to the U.P. an awful lot every year. I mean like about twice a month if not more all winter long. If things keep up, I may have to find somewhere else to enjoy my sport. What really worries me here, is the U.P. really depends on us sledders to get them through the winters, just like northern Wisconsin. When there is no snow, it hurts many lodges, taverns, etc. What's going to happen to local business's if other sledders think this way and less and less sledders travel to the U.P.? I'd hate to see that happen to people trying to make a living up there, didn't these damn people think about that?

no...they...the constituents who are pushing it are of wealth..land wealth or whatever and dont care what happens to those who benefit from our tourist driven sport...this is the first of many attempts to put a choke hold on snowmobiling....sit back and watch and see...
the next bill in the works will be changing registrations in michigan to some sort of title for secured parites (banks and credit unions)...you can bet your **s it will cost us more at the sec of state though....

I haven't ridden anywhere but the U.P. for Probably at least 5 years. Three or four years ago our group got busted on a trumped up charge of riding along a highway with an M beside the #. Owner of the cabins told us we could as it was the only way to get from their cabins without trailering. I should have known better. Last year the owner of the cabins where we stay warned us to come to a complete stop at a stop sign at the railroad and he stressed complete stop. He said that the DNR would sit at the edge of town and watch. I obey the signs but I'm pretty sure that I usually don't get completely stopped. I told him it was that kind of attitude that chased us out of Newberry. Have you noticed how many motels and small businesses in the Newberry area that have closed. They aren't helping themselves. With that said we still need someone to get trails for us to use. Stop at the booth and give your opinion, I hope I have to stand in line to give mine and ask my questions.

and theres my point...the dnr will hassle and ticket and riders and buisness owners will suffer...
who could actually think there is good in tightening the restrictions on a 3 mo sport that brings tons of revenues to our state?
