I have used a dakine tactic for the last few years and loved it separate pouches for shovel and probe away from the rest of your gear. I also love my abs escape 15 but it doesn't quite carry all my gear.

agreed on the BCA float 30 pack. I am very surprised as to just how much stuff you can put in that pack. Separate shovel handle and probe sleeves make it easy and convenient. Everything is tight so they is nothing hanging off this side that can get snagged on trees.
It really isn't that much heavier then my True Adventure pack with the exact same gear in it.
BCA does a great job with their pack.
as a note - I have the klim nac pack - while I wouldn't rate it as a mnt pack as it is simply too small to pack all the appropriate gear needed. It is fine for a day trip where you know for 100% fact you will not be spending the night in the woods. Otherwise it is way to small to hold anything other than a spare pair of gloves and some bare essentials.
As noted I also have this years True Adventure pack from Yamaha. I would rate this pack average. Lots of room, lots of adjustment with chest strap, shoulder straps, good clasps. The issue with it is pure lack of compartments. Literally two with one small zip pouch located in one larger pack. The outside shovel clasp is ok - but sticks out so far that trees can catch hold of it when not careful. Would like to have smaller pouches for important items for division vs having to use all separate waterproof bags. I guess its more of a convenience thing.
If I was to look for a non-av pack - i should have looked at the different BCA packs. Some of the guys I rode with last weekend had a few different models - all looks much better then my True Adventure and WAY better then anything Klim has to offer.
Just sayin

I am looking at this pack this year for trail riding, just spare gloves, goggles and maybe some layers at most. I see a few guys said get tall torso packs if taller and im 6' 3". Anybody know if this pack would be in that catergory? I like the size and price and dont want to spend over a hundo for a pack either.
Confused?

I didnt want to spen a lot on one so I got a $50 northface jester and I love it! It is big enough to fit a shovel jumpercables and extra gloves... Plus extra room for other stuff and a small compartment for smaller things plus I keep a big coil of rope that has come in handy a few times...

Can anybody comment on if the HMK pack will fall into the tall torso catergory?

I use the ABS Escape Freeride. I wouldnt mind the Escape 15..
In our group we have 2 Freerides, 2 Escape 30s, and a BCA Float 30. IMO if your gona ride out west, you gota have an airbag of some brand.

I have the Ortovox and really like the fact that the shovel and probe are on the inside. I spend way too much time in the trees. I don't want to be laying by the tree watching my sled continue on without me.
